THE GOSPELS: THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: BEATITUDE 3, BLESSED are the MEEK for they will INHERIT the EARTH
8 May 2026
We are proceeding to study the SERMON of YESHUA on the MOUNT.
We are mainly reading from the Complete Jewish Study Bible – insight for Jews and Christians. We use the Hebrew letters for the name of God, YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh) where the word LORD in English is indicated in capital letters in the Scriptures. The reason being that the Jewish writers removed the vowels in God’s name out of fear of transgressing the third Commandment of taking His Name in vain. And today there is a lot of controversy about the pronunciation of His Name. We also refer to Him as Abba Father and use the Hebrew Name Yeshua the Messiah instead of the English Name Jesus Christ translated from the Greek.
We are studying the third BEATITUDE in Matthew 5:5 where Yeshua taught: “How BLESSED (meaning happy and fortunate) are the MEEK! For they will INHERIT the LAND.” Most other Bible versions says, the MEEK will inherit the EARTH, referring to the NEW EARTH.
We read similar words in Psalm 37:10-11 saying: “Soon the wicked will be no more; you will look for his place, and he won’t be there. But the MEEK will inherit the LAND and delight themselves in ABUNDANT PEACE.”
Hebrews 11:8-10 tells us: “By TRUSTING (believing, having faith), Abraham OBEYED, after being called to go out to a place which God would give him as a possession; indeed, he went out without knowing where he was going. By TRUSTING (believing, having faith), he lived as a temporary resident in the LAND of PROMISE, as if it were not his, staying in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were to receive what was PROMISED along with him. For he was LOOKING FORWARD to the CITY with PERMANENT FOUNDATIONS, of which the ARCHITECT and BUILDER is GOD (referring to the NEW JERUSALEM on the NEW EARTH).”
The Jewish Study Bible explains: Abraham’s awareness of the deeper meaning of the PROMISED LAND gave him the FAITH to REMAIN OBEDIENT to GOD in the face of not receiving during his lifetime what had been promised. This is why he could aspire to a BETTER FATHERLAND, a HEAVENLY ONE. And likewise this promise extends to believers as we read in Philippians 3:20 “…we are CITIZENS of HEAVEN, and it is from there that we expect a DELIVERER, the MASTER, YESHUA the MESSIAH.”
Meekness is also described in the Word as gentleness (calmness, kindness, tenderness) and humbleness. The Nelson’s Foundational Bible Dictionary reminds us that meekness is NOT weakness (softness or feebleness) as our culture often tends to think mistakenly, rather MEEKNESS is STRENGTH (power) under CONTROL. It involves patience (endurance, tolerance, perseverance), humility and a gentle (calm) spirit.
We see something of this MEEKNESS as STREGTH under CONTROL in the prophecy in Isaiah 11:1-5 about Messiah Yeshua on whom the SPIRIT of YHVH will rest, the SPIRIT of WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING, the SPIRIT of COUNSEL and POWER, the SPIRIT of KNOWLEDGE and FEARING YHVH. “He will not JUDGE by what His eyes see or decide by what His ears hear, but He will JUDGE the impoverished justly (the poor and broken in spirit, therefore referring to those who know how much they need Him); He will decide FAIRLY for the HUMBLE of the LAND. He will strike the wicked with a BREATH from HIS LIPS. JUSTICE will be the BELT around His waist, FAITHFULNESS the sash around His hips. Also read Revelation 19:11-21. Therefore Zephaniah 2:3 warns: “Seek YHVH, all you HUMBLE in the LAND, you who exercise HIS JUSTICE; seek RIGHTEOUSNESS, seek HUMILITY – you might be hidden on THE DAY of YHVH’s anger.”
We also read in Galatians 5:22-23 that HUMILITY (meekness) and SELF-CONTROL (the strength to keep your mind and will under control) are FRUITS of the HOLY SPIRIT. And we know that the HOLY SPIRIT is the POWER of GOD driving out demons and through Him Yeshua our Messiah had risen from the dead! Read Matthew 12:28 and Romans 8:11.
Think of it, anyone can lose control over their mind, tongue and actions, but it REQUIRES HUMILITY and SELF-CONTROL to restrain the FLESHLY MIND and WILL, especially when offended (insulted, hurt or upset)! Pride and the sinful self will cry out for revenge, but the meek will surrender the case to God for His judgement and His decision, remain calm and choosing to FORGIVE as God instructs us in His Word. Therefore meekness is indeed STRETGH under CONTROL! And because of our sin nature it does not come naturally! It takes guts, it takes dying to the old sinful self and it needs daily practice with the help of the Holy Spirit. But REMEMBER the REWARD, the MEEK will inherit the NEW EARTH and on this earth we will FIND REST for our SOULS.
Our greatest example of meekness and gentleness is therefore Yeshua our Messiah Himself. He was willing to leave His place of glory in heaven, take on the form of a man, being a servant and to suffer and die at the hands of the sinful people He came to save (Philippians 2:5-11). We read in Matthew 11:28-30 His invitation to all humanity: “Come to Me, all of you who are struggling (stressed, worried, anxious, weary, tired, exhausted, drained) and burdened (troubled, weighed down), and I will GIVE you REST. Take My yoke upon you and LEARN from Me, because I am GENTLE and HUMBLE in HEART, and you will find REST for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” And it is clearly the example believers are to follow as Paul tells believers in 2nd Corinthians 10:1 that he is “making an appeal to them with the MEEKNESS (humbleness, gentleness) and FORBEARANCE (patience, self-control, tolerance) that come from the MESSIAH”.
So let’s explore what the Word teaches us on MEEKNESS, also called HUMILITY and GENLENESS.
We read in Numbers 12:3 “…Moses was very humble, more so than anyone on earth.” And it is confirmed in Hebrews 11:24-26 that Moses, even though he had grown up in the house of Pharaoh, chose to be mistreated along with God’s people rather than enjoying the passing pleasures of sin in the house of Pharaoh. We read in verse 25: “He had come to regard abuse suffered on behalf of the Messiah as greater riches than the treasures of Egypt, for he kept his eyes fixed on the reward.”
Moses eventually led the Israelites out of Egypt under God’s direct guidance. Much of Moses’ life therefore could have resulted in pride, yet he chose to stay humble, a characteristic that allowed him to remain obedient under the guiding hand of God.
In Psalm 25:8-9 David said: “YHVH is GOOD, and HE is FAIR; this is why He TEACHES sinners THE WAY (to live), LEADS the HUMBLE to DO what is RIGHT and TEACHES the HUMBLE (to live) HIS WAY.
Believers are encouraged to use MEEKNESS and GENTLENESS when dealing with one another, rather than force or anger.
In Proverbs 15:1 we read: “A gentle response (answer) deflects (repels, deters, prevents) fury (anger, wrath), but harsh words makes tempers rise.”
Paul taught believers much about this.
In Galatians 5:24-26 he says: …those who BELONG to the MESSIAH YESHUA have put their old nature to death on the cross, along with its passions and desires. Since it is through the (HOLY) SPIRIT that we have LIFE, let it also be through the (HOLY) SPIRIT that we order our lives day by day. Let us not become conceited (self-important, proud, arrogant), provoking (infuriating, irritating, frustrating) and envying (coveting, bitter, nasty, being jealous of) each other. And in Galatians 6:1-10 Paul explains: “Brothers, suppose someone is caught doing something wrong. You who have the (HOLY) SPIRIT should set him right, but in a spirit of HUMILITY, keeping an eye on yourselves so that you won’t be tempted too. Bear one another’s burdens (problems, difficulties, afflictions, weaknesses) – in this way you will be fulfilling the Torah’s (Genesis to Deuteronomy’s) TRUE MEANING, which the MESSIAH upholds (Paul already told them in verse 14 that the whole Torah is summed up in this one sentence: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’). For if anyone thinks he is something when he is really nothing, he is fooling himself. So let each of you scrutinize (examine) his OWN ACTIONS. Then if you find something to boast about, at least the boasting will be based on what you have actually DONE and not merely on a judgement that you are better than someone else; for each person will carry his own load. But whoever is being INSTRUCTED in THE WORD should share all the GOOD THINGS he has with his instructor (teacher, mentor, coach – thus calling us to mutual support within the Body of Messiah , sharing our resources and blessings) Don’t delude (deceive, mislead) yourselves; no one makes a fool of God (the Father)! A person reaps what he sows. Those who keep sowing in the field of their old nature, in order to meet its demands, will eventually reap ruin; but those who keep sowing in the field of the (HOLY) SPIRIT will reap from the SPIRIT EVERLASTING LIFE. So let us not grow weary of DOING what is GOOD; for if we don’t give up, we will in due time REAP the HARVEST. Therefore, if the opportunity arises, let us DO what is GOOD to everyone, and especially to the family of those who are TRUSTINGLY FAITHFUL (meaning to faithful believers).”
And in Ephesians 4:2 Paul recommends: “ALWAYS be HUMBLE, GENTLE and patient, bearing with one another in LOVE, and making every effort to preserve the UNITY the (HOLY) SPIRIT gives through the BINDING POWER of SHALOM (peace).”
Paul further says in Philippians 4:4-5 “REJOICE in UNION with the MASTER (Yeshua) ALWAYS! I will say it again: REJOICE! Let everyone see how reasonable (sensible, rational, sound) and GENTLE (calm, kind and tender-hearted) you are. The Master (Yeshua) is near!”
And in Colossians 3:12-13 Paul encourages believers: “Therefore, as God’s CHOSEN people, HOLY (consecrated, sanctified, set-apart) and DEARLY (greatly, deeply) LOVED, clothe yourselves with feelings of COMPASSION (empathy, concern, care) and with KINDNESS, HUMILITY, GENTLENESS and PATIENCE. Bear with one another; if anyone has a complaint against someone else FORGIVE him. Indeed, just as the Master (Yeshua) has FORGIVEN you, so you must (are required to) FORGIVE.”
In 1st Timothy 6:11 Paul says “But you, as a man of God, flee from these things (the riches, temptations and evils of the world as mentioned in verses 9-10); and PURSUE RIGHTEOUSNESS, GODLINESS (holiness, goodness), FAITHFULNESS (truth), LOVE, STEADFASTNESS (loyalty), GENTLENESS.” And in Titus 3:2 he advices: “…, to slander (belittle, insult, smear) no one, to avoid quarrelling (fighting, arguing, disagreeing), to be FRIENDLY (welcoming, approachable, pleasant, kind), and to BEHAVE GENTLY towards everyone.
And Peter talks to believing wives in 1st Peter 3:3-4 telling them: “Your beauty should not consist in externals such as fancy hairstyles, gold jewelry or what you wear; rather, let it be the INNER CHARACTER of YOUR HEART, with the imperishable quality of a GENTLE and quiet spirit. In God’s sight this is of great value.”
And Peter further says in verses 8-9 “, all of you, be one in mind and feeling, LOVE as brothers; and be compassionate (kind-hearted) and HUMBLE-MINDED, not repaying evil with evil or insult with insult, but on the contrary, with blessing. For it is to this that you have been called, so that you may receive a blessing.” And in verses 15-17 Peter advices: “..treat the MESSIAH as HOLY, as MASTER of your HEARTS; while remaining always ready to give a reasoned (coherent, sound, thorough) answer to anyone who asks you to explain the HOPE you have in you – yes with HUMILITY and FEAR, keeping your CONSIENCE clear, so that when you are spoken against, those who abuse the good behavior flowing from your UNION with the MESSIAH may be put to shame. For if GOD has in fact willed that you should suffer, it is better that you suffer for doing what is good than for doing what is evil.”
And as Messiah Yeshua told us in Matthew 5:5, the MEEK will inherit the EARTH.
So let us remind ourselves of this fantastic inheritance and make sure we make every effort to be meek towards others!
After Messiah Yeshua returns, and the final white throne judgement has occurred as we read in Revelation 20:11-15, God will create a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH.
Paul quotes Isaiah 64:3 and 52:15 in 1st Corinthians 2:9 saying “No eye has seen, no ear has heard and no one’s heart has imagined ALL the THINGS that GOD has PREPARED for those who LOVES HIM.”
And Peter explains the burning and melting away of the current heavens and earth and the promise of the NEW HEAVENS and EARTH in 2nd Peter 3:10-14 saying: “…the DAY of the MASTER (Yeshua) will come like a THIEF. On that DAY the HEAVENS will disappear with a roar, the ELEMENTS will MELT and DISINTEGRATE, and the EARTH and everything in it will be BURNED UP. Since everything is going to be destroyed like this, what kind of people should we be? You should lead HOLY (consecrated, sanctified/ dedicated, set-apart) and GODLY (good, righteous) LIVES, as you wait for the DAY of GOD (the Father) and work to hasten its coming. THAT DAY will bring on the DESTRUCTION of the HEAVENS by FIRE, and the elements will MELT from the HEAT; but we, following along with HIS PROMISE, wait for NEW HEAVENS and a NEW EARTH, in which RIGHTEOUSNESS (virtue, morality, justice, honesty, blamelessness/ innocence/ purity) will be at home. Therefore, dear friends, as you look for these things, DO EVERYTHING you can to be found by Him without spot or defect (blameless/ innocent/ pure) and at PEACE.”
And in Revelation 21:1-7 we read of this MAGNIFICANT NEW HEAVENS and EARTH as revealed to John: “Then I saw a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH, for the old heaven and the old earth has passed away, and the sea was no longer there. Also I saw the HOLY CITY, NEW JERUSALEM. Coming down out of HEAVEN from GOD (the Father), prepared like a BRIDE beautifully dressed for her HUSBAND (and we know from Revelation 19:7-8, the BRIDE, the NEW JERUSALEM was clothed in FINE LINEN, bright and clean meaning the NEW JERUSALEM will be filled with the RIGHTEOUSS DEEDS of God’s people)”. And God’s Sh’kinah (a Hebrew word for God’s DIVINE PRESENCE, His manifest GLORY/ magnificent splendor, beauty and brilliance) will be with mankind, and HE WILL LIVE WITH THEM. They will be HIS PEOPLE, and HE HIMSELF, God-with-them (Immanuel), will be THEIR GOD. (There are many references and prophecies about this in the Old Testament like, Leviticus 26:11-12, Isaiah 7:14 & 8:8, Jeremiah 31:33, Ezekiel 37:27 and 2nd Chronicles 6:18). He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will no longer be any death; and there will no longer be any mourning (sorrow), crying or pain; because the old has passed away.
And in Revelation 21:8-27 and 22:1-7 the following picture is painted:
- Everything will be made new.
- Water from the FOUNTAIN of LIFE will be free of charge.
- Those who wins the VICTORY will receive these things and HE will be their GOD and they will be HIS SONS.
- They will have access to the NEW JERUSALEM, a city with the Sh’kinah (the Divine Presence and Glory) of GOD (the Father) so that its brilliance would be like a priceless jewel, like a crystal clear jasper.
- The city will have a GREAT HIGH WALL with TWELVE GATES; TWELVE ANGELS at the GATES and INSCRIBED on the GATES the TWLEVE TRIBES of ISRAEL. The TWELVE GATES will be made of TWELVE PEARLS.
- The WALL of the CITY will be built on TWELVE FOUNDATION STONES and on them WRITTEN the TWELVE NAMES of the TWELVE APOSTLES of the LAMB.
- The city is laid out in a square.
- The WALL will be made of JASPER and the CITY of PURE GOLD, resembling PURE GLASS. The main street of the city will be PURE GOLD, transparent as GLASS.
- The FOUNDATIONS of the CITY WALL will be decorated with all kinds of PRECIOUS STONES.
- There were no TEMPLE in the city, for YHVH, GOD of HEAVEN’s ARMIES, is ITS TEMPLE, as is THE LAMB.
- The city has no need for the sun or the moon to shine on it, neither will the light of a lamp be required, because God’s Sh’kinah (His Divine Presence and Glory) GIVE it LIGHT, and its LAMP is the LAMB.
- The nations will walk in HIS LIGHT.
- The GATES of the CITY will never close, they stay open all day because night will not
- Nothing impure will enter the city, ONLY THOSE whose names are written in the LAMB’s BOOK of LIFE.
- The RIVER of the WATER of LIFE, sparkling like crystal flow from the THRONE of GOD (the Father) and of the LAMB (Yeshua the Messiah).
- Between the MAINS STREET of GOLD and the RIVER is the TREE of LIFE producing TWELVE KINDS of FRUIT, a DIFFERENT KIND EVERY MONTH.
- The LEAVES of the TREE are for the HEALING of the nations – no longer will there be any curses.
- The THRONE of GOD (the Father) and the LAMB (Yeshua the Messiah) will be in the city, and His servants will WORSHIP HIM; they will see HIS FACE, and HIS NAME will be on their FOREHEADS.
- YHVH, God (the Father), will shine upon them. And they will reign as kings forever and ever.
