THE GOSPELS: THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: BEATITUDE 1, the meaning of the KINGDOM of HEAVEN, Part 5, ETERNITY and the POOR in SPIRIT as heirs

We are proceeding to study the SERMON of YESHUA on the MOUNT.
We are mainly reading from the Complete Jewish Study Bible – insight for Jews and Christians. We use the Hebrew letters for the name of God, YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh) where the word LORD in English is indicated in capital letters in the Scriptures. The reason being that the Jewish writers removed the vowels in God’s name out of fear of transgressing the third Commandment of taking His Name in vain. And today there is a lot of controversy about the pronunciation of His Name. We also refer to Him as Abba Father and use the Hebrew Name Yeshua the Messiah instead of the English Name Jesus Christ translated from the Greek.
We are in process of studying the first BEATITUDE in Matthew 5:3 where Yeshua taught: “How BLESSED (meaning happy and fortunate) are the poor in spirit! For the KINGDOM of HEAVEN is theirs.”
And to understand the beatitudes better we are focusing first on what Yeshua our Messiah meant by the KINGDOM of HEAVEN.
We have already learned the following about the KINGDOM of HEAVEN, also known as the KINGDOM of GOD, namely:
1. IT HAS A PRESENT AND A FUTURE REALITY
This means we are SAVED through accepting the full price Yeshua our Messiah paid on our behalf for our sins, setting us FREE from the slavery to sin, the sicknesses accompanying it and the second death. And we die with Him in the waters of baptism and are raised with Him as a new person, being washed by the Water of the Word every day and repenting of accidental sins. Then we are baptized with fire and the Holy Spirit by Him and we spread the Good News as part of executing our purpose and calling. And in so doing we died to the sinful flesh, were reborn as children of God the Father and are now spiritually alive and already sitting with Yeshua our Messiah in heavenly places as Paul explained in Colossians 1:13 saying: “He (God the Father) has RESCUED us from the domain of darkness and TRANSFERRED us into the KINGDOM of HIS DEAR SON (referring to Yeshua the Messiah).” And Ephesians 2:6 saying: “…God raised us up with the Messiah Yeshua and seated us with Him in heaven,”
Then there is:
2. PARADISE (the Garden of Eden)
This is the interim place the SAVED will go upon dying the FIRST DEATH where they wait for the SECOND COMING of YESHUA the MESSIAH during which their spirit and soul will then return WITH HIM and their bodies will be resurrected as we read in 1st Thessalonians 4:13-18.
And next there is:
3. THE THOUSAND YEAR KINGDOM of PEACE under the RULERSHIP of YESHUA (also called the MILLENNIAL KINGDOM).
Paul tells us in 1st Corinthians 15:23-26 that those who belong to Messiah Yeshua will be resurrected at His Second Coming, this is known as the FIRST RESURECTION and they will rule with Him during the THOUSAND YEARS of PEACE (read Daniel 7:9-22, 2nd Timothy 2:12, 1st Thessalonians 4:16, Revelation 1:6 and 20:4-6). Yeshua has to RULE as KING until He has put an END to every other rulership, authority and power. We therefore see before the beginning of the THOUSAND YEAR KINGDOM of PEACE and directly after the BATTLE of ARMAGEDON the antimessiah/ the antichrist and false prophet will be thrown alive into the Lake of Fire (read Revelation 19:11-21) And after the THOUSAND YEAR KINGDOM, Satan, who will be bound during the THOUSAND YEAR KINGDOM OF PEACE, will be let loose for a short time to test the nations who were part of the MILLENIAL KINGDOM. Satan and those whom he deceives again, will rise up against the KINGDOM in the GOG and MAGOG WAR and will be destroyed ending with Satan joining the antimessiah/ antichrist and the false prophet in the Lake of Fire (read Ezekiel 38 & 39 and Revelation 20:7-10). After the WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT the last enemy to be done away with will be DEATH and SHEOL (a Hebrew word for the underworld, the abode of the unsaved dead called Hades in Greek). Read 1st Corinthians 15:25-26 and Revelation 20:14. And at the end of the THOUSAND YEAR REIGN OF PEACE, Yeshua will hand over the KINGDOM to GOD the FATHER and He Himself will be made subject to God the Father so that God the Father may be everything in everyone (read 1st Corinthians 15:24-28, Revelation 21:22-26 and 22:1-5).
And today we are focussing on the FINAL DIMENSION of THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, also known as THE KINGDOM OF GOD, namely:
4. ETERNITY on the NEW EARTH
In Matthew 13:36-43 Yeshua explained to His disciples the parable of the weeds in the field as told in Matthew 13:18-30, saying: “The ONE who SOWS THE GOOD SEED is the SON of MAN, the FIELD is the WORLD. As for the GOOD SEED these are the PEOPLE WHO BELONG TO THE KINGDOM; and the WEEDS are the PEOPLE WHO belongs to the evil one. The ENEMY who SOWS them is the ADVERSARY (Satan), THE HARVEST is the END OF THE AGE, and the HARVESTERS are ANGELS. Just as the WEEDS are COLLECTED and BURNED UP in the FIRE, so it will be at the END OF THE AGE. The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will collect out of His Kingdom all the things that cause people to sin and all the people who are far from Torah (the NIV says: “all who do evil”); and they will throw them into the fiery furnace, where people will wail and grind their teeth. Then the RIGHTEOUS will shine forth like the sun in the KINGDOM of their FATHER.”
So here Yeshua our Messiah is explaining the Great Throne Judgement after the Thousand Year Kingdom of Peace of which we read in Revelation 20:11-15. The BOOKS will be opened, including the BOOK of LIFE (the book where the names of those redeemed by the blood of the Lamb’s will be written) and everyone will be JUDGED according to what they have done. From the parable it seems as if judgement will be according to the summary of Genesis to Deuteronomy, namely the TEN COMMANDMENTS of YHVH to LOVE HIM BOVE ALL ELSE and our NEIGBOUR as OURSELVES. And anyone whose name is not written in the BOOK of LIFE (therefore those who did not accept the price paid for their sin by Yeshua the Messiah will stand before God for their own sin and) will be thrown into the Lake of Fire.
In Hebrews 11:10 we read: For he (Abraham) was LOOKING FORWARD to the CITY with PERMANENT FOUNDATIONS of which the ARCHITECT and BUILDER is GOD the FATHER! So again this is a reference to the NEW YERUSALEM with its TWELVE FOUNDATIONS of PRECIOUS STONES as we read in Revelation 21.
And in Hebrews 11:13-16 we read: All these people (Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and Jacob), acknowledged that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth. They aspired to a better fatherland, a HEAVENLY ONE. This is why GOD is not ashamed to be called their GOD, for HE has prepared for them a CITY.
In Matthew 22:31-32 Yeshua testified that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are still alive. And therefore they are currently in PARADISE (the Garden of Eden) until they will come with Yeshua the Messiah during His second coming.
In Hebrews 12:22 the writer further says to believers: You have come to MOUNT SION, the CITY of the LIVING GOD, HEAVENLY JERUSALEM; to myriads of angels in festive assembly, to a COMMUNITY OF THE FIRSBORN (the people part of the FIRST RESURECTION!) whose names have been recorded in heaven; to a JUDGE who is GOD of everyone; to spirits of RIGHTEOUS PEOPLE who have been brought to the goal to the MEDIATOR of a NEW COVENANT, YESHUA; and to the sprinkled blood that speaks better things than that of Abel. See to it that you don’t reject Him.
And in Hebrews 13:14 we read: “For we have no permanent city here; on the contrary, we SEEK THE ONE TO COME (alluding to the HEAVENLY JERUSALEM).”
Peter encourages believers to live HOLY and GODLY LIVES in 2nd Peter 3:11 since everything will be destroyed on JUDGEMENT DAY by FIRE but then he says in verse 13, “…we, following along with HIS PROMISE, wait for NEW HEAVENS and a NEW EARTH, in which RIGHTEOUSNESS will be at home. Thus echoing Revelation 21:27 saying nothing impure may enter the city, nor any shameful things or lies; the only ones who may enter are those whose names are written in the LAMB’s BOOK of LIFE (with other words those redeemed by the blood of Yeshua our Messiah).
And Peter then encourages believers in 2nd Peter 3:14-15 as we look for these things, we should “do EVERYTHING we can to be found by HIM without spot or defect (therefore without sin) and at PEACE”. And to “think of Messiah Yeshua’s patience as DELIVERANCE” and keep GUARDING ourselves so that we will not be led away by the errors of the wicked and fall away from our secure position and to keep GROWING in GRACE and KNOWLEDGE of our Master, Yeshua the Messiah.
And we read in Revelation chapter 21 to 22:5 of the NEW HEAVEN and NEW EARTH and the NEW HOLY CITY, the NEW JERUSALEM coming down out of HEAVEN from GOD (the Father) and God will be with His people. And then the NEW JERUSALEM are described as the BRIDE. And it is confirmed that there will be NO TEMPLE in the NEW JERUSALEM but GOD and the LAMB will be its TEMPLE and GOD will be the LIGHT and YESHUA the LAMP of the city. We also read of a RIVER of LIVE flowing from the THRONE of GOD and of the LAMB and between the main street and the RIVER was the TREE of LIFE producing TWELVE KINDS of FRUIT, a different kind every month; and the LEAVES of the TREES are for HEALING of the nations and there will no longer be any curses neither would there be darkness nor death.
So this is THE KINGDOM the POOR in SPIRIT will inherit – while on earth they will already SPIRITUALLY SIT IN HEAVENLY PLACES WITH YESHUA the MESSIAH and when they DIE the FIRST DEATH, they will go to PARADISE until the time of Yeshua’s Second Coming when they will come with Him and receive their RESURRECTED BODIES and will form part of HIS ARMY during the WAR of ARMAGEDON, also known as JUDGEMENT DAY and they will RULE and REIGN with YESHUA, the KING of the THOUSAND YEAR REIGN of PEACE and thereafter they will be with HIM and the FATHER in the ETERNAL KINGDOM FOREVER.
So let’s now look at WHO exactly the POOR in SPIRIT are.
The Nelsons Foundational Bible Dictionary defines the POOR in SPIRIT as: “Those who realize the fact that their own righteousness is inadequate, and recognize their need for God’s mercy.”
Yeshua provides us with an example of a person with a POOR SPIRIT in Luke 18:9-14. This is a parable he told to those who were relying on their OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS and LOOKING DOWN on everyone else. “Two men went up to the Temple to PRAY, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself, ‘O God! I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity – greedy, dishonest, immoral or like this tax-collector! I fast twice a week, I pay tithes on my entire income,… But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes toward heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God! Have mercy on me, sinner that I am!” And then Yeshua said in verse 14: “I tell you, this man went down to his home RIGHT WITH GOD rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but everyone who humbles himself will be exalted.”
This is in line with what John tells us in 1st John 1:1-10. We read in verses 5-10 And this is THE MESSAGE which we heard from Him (Yeshua the Messiah) and proclaim to you: God (the Father) is LIGHT, and there is NO DARKNESS in HIM – none! If we claim to have FELLOWSHIP with Him while we are WALKING in DARKNESS, we are lying and NOT living out THE TRUTH. But if we are WALKING IN THE LIGHT, as HE IS IN THE LIGHT, then we HAVE FELLOWSHIP with each other, and the BLOOD of HIS SON YEHSUA PURIFIES US from ALL SIN. If we claim not to have sin, we are DECEIVING ourselves, and the TRUTH is not in us. If we acknowledge (admit, confess) our sins, then He is trustworthy and just, He will FORGIVE them and PURIFY us from ALL WRONGDOING. If we claim we have not been sinning, we are making Him out to be a liar, and His WORD is not in us.
We read in Isaiah 25:4 “For You have been a REFUGE (sanctuary, shelter, protection) for the poor, a REFUGE for the needy in distress, SHELTER from the storm, SHADE from the heat – for the blast from the ruthless was like a storm that could destroy a wall.”
And in Isaiah 57:15 we read that He REVIVES (wake up and restore) the spirit of the humble.
Isaiah 66:2 tells us: The HUMBLE and CONTRITE (repentant/ remorseful, penitent) in SPIRIT TREMBLE at HIS WORD.
In Jeremiah 22:16 we read YHVH UPHELDS (supports, defends) the cause of the poor and the weak.
Proverbs 16:18-19 contrasts a poor spirit versus a haughty spirit. Proverbs 21:4 says HAUGHTY EYES (to look down on others and elevate themselves) and a PROUD HEART (a self-important mindset) PRODUCE SIN.
In Luke 7:22 Yeshua says: “…the GOOD NEWS are told to the poor (as also prophesied in Isaiah 61:1) – and how BLESSED is anyone NOT offended by Me!
The POOR in SPIRIT is therefore NOT OFFENDED by YESHUA, the WORD of GOD!
We see in James 4:6 as well as 1st Peter 5:5-6 God opposes the proud, but to the humble He gives grace as also indicated in Proverbs 3:34.
We also read in Psalm 10:3-4 PROUD PEOPLE do not SEEK GOD, because they think they do not need HIM! And it is also noted that ARROGANT, PROUD people fiercely pursue (chase, hunt, track) the poor! It makes sense, because we know Satan and his evil forces pursue believers and the Word tells us in Ephesians 6:12 that they are our enemies!
Daniel tells us in Daniel 5:20 what happens when we are PROUD – our hearts are lifted up and thus PRIDE HARDENS a person’s spirit so that we deal PROUDLY with others – and we see in both Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar’s case and indeed many of the kings of Israel (the Northern Kingdom) and Judah (the Southern Kingdom), GOD brought DOWN from their thrones and took their glory away! We read in Psalm 101:5b “Haughty (arrogant) eyes and proud hearts I (YHVH) cannot abide (tolerate, endure, allow).” And we read in Proverbs 15:25 YHVH will pull down the houses of the PROUD.
Proverbs 21:24 gives the following definition of a “scoffer” (scorner, ridiculer, mocker, belittling/ demeaning) of which Peter told us there will be many during the end times (2nd Peter 3:3-4) due to the LOVE for God and LOVE for other people growing cold – therefore meaning people discarding and forsaking ABBA FATHER’s LAW OF LOVE, HIS TORAH, Genesis to Deuteronomy summed up in the TEN COMMANDMENTS. A “scoffer” is the name of THE ARROGANT (big headed), a haughty (self-important, over confident) person who acts with ARROGANT PRIDE (superiority). Proverbs 3:34 confirms towards the scorner, He is scornful (disapproving) but to the HUMBLE HE gives favor. (Also read Psalm 2).
Obadiah 1:3 tells us PRIDE in our HEARTS can DECEIVE us, we can wear it like a necklace for all to see (read Psalm 73:6), and it can makes us feel as if we are UNTOUCHABLE but the fact is, all humans wither and die like grass as we read in Psalm 103:15 and Isaiah 40:6 and confirmed in 1st Peter 1:24 as well as James 1:10. And in Revelation 3:17, Yeshua our Messiah warns: For you keep saying: I am RICH, I have gotten RICH, I don’t need a thing! You don’t know that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked!” (Also read Deuteronomy 8:11-14, Hosea 12:8, 1st Timothy 6:17-18 and James 1:9-10 & 5:1-6).
Proverbs 16:5 warns us that GOD will PUNISH pride, as we also see clearly written in Leviticus 26:19, Isaiah 2:12 and 13:11. Proverbs 18:12 tells us before a DOWNFALL, the heart is haughty (proud, arrogant, self-important). We are warned that PRIDE is from the world, therefore PRIDE is PROOF that a person acts in the FLESH (the old sinful nature). Messiah Yeshua tells us in Mark 7:20-23 that out of a heart of a person comes wicked things like ARROGANCE (PRIDE) making the person UNCLEAN (impure, contaminated, polluted, filthy). And John tells us in 1 John 2:16-17 the desires of the OLD NATURE, including the pretentions (self-importance) of life, is not of the FATHER but from the world. “And the world is passing away, along with its desires. But whoever DOES GOD’S WILL remains FOREVER.” Psalm 31:23 says: “LOVE YHVH, you FAITHFUL of HIS. YHVH preserves the LOYAL, but the PROUD He repays in full.
So maybe one of the reasons why GOD the FATHER hates PRIDE is because it will cause people to be offended at HIS WORD and therefore to reject it and to persecute believers in Him and at the end He will have to PUNISH them! (Read Proverbs 6:16-17
We know that PRIDE was the main problem Satan had and therefore also the main reason for his down fall (read Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28:17). And we read in Job 41:34 Leviathan (a giant sea serpent alluding to Satan) is the king over the sons of pride.
GOD, in His mercy will give us a chance, if we are PROUD, to avoid being PUNISHED by HUMBLING us! (Daniel 4:37) Paul said in 2nd Corinthians 12:1-6 that God made extraordinary great revelations to him during an experience, fourteen years earlier where he was snatched up to the THRID HEAVEN, indicated by him as THE GARDEN of EDEN (also called PARADISE). And then he explains in verse 7-9: “Therefore, to keep me from becoming overly PROUD, I was GIVEN a THORN in my flesh, a MESSENGER from the Adversary to POUND (beat) AWAY at me, so that I wouldn’t grow conceited (self-important, proud).” And Paul then says he has begged Messiah Yeshua three times to take this thing away from him, but He told him “My grace is enough for you, for MY POWER is brought to PERFECTION in WEAKNESS.” And then Paul says: “Therefore, I am happy to boast about my weaknesses, in order that the MESSIAH’s POWER WILL REST upon me.” And then Paul actually tells us what the THORN is that he has to bear when he says in verse 10: Yes, I am well pleased with WEAKNESSES, INSULTS, HARDSHIPS, PERSECUTIONS and DIFFICULTIES endured (tolerated, suffered) on behalf of the MESSIAH; for when I am WEAK (fragile, aware of my own insufficiency without Him) then I am STRONG (resilient, able to endure and persevere in Him). In line with this, Yeshua our Messiah said in Luke 12:48b “From him who has been GIVEN MUCH, MUCH will be DEMANDED – from someone who people entrust (delegate, assign) much, they ask still more.”
Messiah Yeshua is our PERFECT EXAMPLE, also in terms of being POOR in SPIRIT. Paul calls believers in 2nd Corinthians 8:7-8 to excel in everything – in FAITH, in SPEECH, in KNOWLEDGE, in DILIGENCE of every kind, and in their LOVE for them and then he says, he is no issuing an order; rather he is TESTING the GENUINENESS of their LOVE against the DILIGENCE of others. And then Paul says in verse 9 “For you know how GENEROUS our Master Yeshua the Messiah was – for your sakes HE IMPOVERISHED HIMSELF, even though HE WAS RICH, so that He might make you rich by means of His poverty.” And we know from John 3:16 the motivation for this was GOD the FAHTER’s LOVE for people, including you and me! So we see again, like explained in 1st Corinthians 13:1-2 if we LACK LOVE, GOD’s KIND of LOVE, we are nothing (our lives do not make a difference) and we gain (achieve) nothing! Paul also explains in Romans 13:8-10 “Don’t owe anyone anything – EXCEPT TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER; for whoever LOVES HIS FELLOW HUMAN BEING has fulfilled TORAH (Genesis to Deuteronomy summed up in the TEN COMMANDMENTS). For the COMMANDMENTS, “Don’t commit adultery”, Don’t murder”, “Don’t steal”, “Don’t covet,” (Exodus 20:13-14 and Deuteronomy 5:17-18) and any others are SUMMED UP in this ONE RULE: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). LOVE does not do harm to a neighbor; therefore LOVE is the FULNESS of TORAH. Therefore, ALL comes down to being HUMBLE before we will be able to LOVE in the way that GOD defines LOVE in HIS WORD! Also read 1st John 3:17-18.
Paul, Peter and James give us the following advice:
In Romans 12:14-16 Paul says “Bless those who persecute you – BLESS them, don’t curse them! Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be sensitive to each other’s needs – don’t think yourselves better than others, but make HUMBLE PEOPLE (the poor in spirit, those who know how much they need God) your friends.
In 1st Corinthians 4:6-7a Paul warns believers not to PROUDLY take the side of one leader against another. “After all, what makes you so special? What do you have that you didn’t receive as a gift (from God)?
In 2nd Corinthians 10:17-18 Paul quotes the words of Jeremiah 9:23, saying: “…let anyone who wants to boast (brag), boast about YHVH, because it is not the one who recommends himself who is worthy of approval, but the one whom (He) the Master recommends.” In Jeremiah 9:23-24 YHVH Himself said: “The wise man should not boast of his WISDOM, the powerful should not boast of his POWER, the wealthy should not boast of his WEALTH; instead, let the boaster boast about this: that he UNDERSTANDS and KNOWS ME – that I am YHVH, PRACTICING GRACE, JUSTICE and RIGHTEOUSNESS in the land; for in these things I take pleasure, says YHVH.”
In Philippians 2 Paul teaches and encourages believers with the following words in verses 2-8, we are to have a COMMON PURPOSE and a COMMON LOVE, by being ONE in HEART and MIND (Yeshua our Messiah also prayed this for His followers in John 17). We should do nothing out of rivalry (competition, enmity/ hate, jealousy) or vanity (pride and arrogance), but in HUMILITY, regard each other as better than ourselves – look out for each other’s interests and not just for our own. Our ATTITIDES should be governed by our being in union with MESSIAH YESHUA, who although He was in the form of GOD, He did not regard equality to God something to possess by force. On the contrary, He emptied Himself, in that He took the form of a servant by becoming like a human beings are. And when He appeared as a human being, He HUMBLED Himself still more by becoming OBEDIENT even to death – death on a cross as a criminal! So clearly a characteristic of HUMBLENESS is OBEDIENCE to GOD to DEATH! A willingness to die to one’s own will and surrender to God the Father’s will! And then we see from verses 9-11 Abba Father REWARDS humility, as Yeshua our Messiah Himself told us as written in Matthew 23:12, Luke 14:11 and 18:14 confirmed by many of the apostles including James in chapter 4:10. And He Himself was REWARDED by God the Father who raised Him after His resurrection and ascension to the HIGHEST PLACE (sitting in heaven on the right side of Abba Father) and He gave Him the NAME above every name; that in honor of THE NAME given to YESHUA, every knee will bow – in heaven, on earth and under the earth – and every tongue will acknowledge (a quotation from Isaiah 45:23) that YESHUA the MESSIAH is YHVH – to the glory of GOD the FATHER. Paul is here quoting Isaiah 45:23, an awesome declaration by YHVH the FATHER Himself and confirmation that YESHUA the MESSIAH is YHVH, the EVERLASTING FATHER as Isaiah also describes Him in Isaiah 9:5 and this will be acknowledged by ALL and the time of the end!
And James encourages believers in chapter 2:1-5 to practice FAITH in Yeshua our Messiah without showing favoritism. And then he explains specifically that we may not treat rich people with more respect than we treat poor people. And in verse 5 he says: “Listen, my dear brothers, hasn’t God CHOSEN the POOR of the world to be RICH in FAITH and to RECEIVE the KINGDOM which He PROMISED to those who LOVE HIM? What we must understand is that it does not mean that only people who have limited money or earthly possessions whom God choose, but there is a tendency for rich people to rely on their money and worldly possessions instead of on God and poor people have nothing to rely on except on God. James then, similar to Paul in Romans 13:8-10, further explains in James 2:8 “If you truly attain the GOAL of KINGDOM Torah (meaning the instructions or LAW of the KINGDOM of God in accordance to Genesis to Deuteronomy and summed up in the TEN COMMANDMENTS, the NIV says: the royal LAW found in Scripture), in conformity with the passage that says, LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF (as written in Leviticus 19:18), you are doing well. And then he proceeds in verse 9 saying: “But if you show favoritism, your actions constitute sin, since you are convicted under the Torah (the LAW of GOD’s KINGDOM) as transgressor (wrongdoer, lawbreaker, evildoer). Meaning, God expect us to treat ALL, people with the same LOVE and RESPECT we would like to be treated with!
