THE GOSPELS: The Ministry of Yeshua the Messiah begins – Luke 4:18 the GOOD NEWS described in the SONG of Moses and the SONG of the LAMB

We are studying Luke 4:14-32, Mathew 4:12 and Mark 1:14-15 about the beginning of the MINISTRY of YESHUA THE MESSIAH. And we are still focusing today on Luke 4:18-21

We are mainly reading from the Complete Jewish Study Bible – insight for Jews and Christians. And use the Hebrew name of God, YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh) where the word LORD in English is indicated in capital letters in the Scriptures, also referring to Him as Abba Father and use the Hebrew Name Yeshua the Messiah instead of the English Name Jesus Christ translated from the Greek.

We have studied the first part of Luke 4:18 about the Holy Spirit being upon Yeshua our Messiah and today we are focusing on that same verse telling us that Yeshua was ANNOINTED to announce GOOD NEWS to the POOR.

So what does this mean? Is the GOOD NEWS only for the POOR (the deprived, the disadvantaged and the underprivileged)? Or does this word, “the poor” has a deep meaning?

We know from our previous discussion that Yeshua the Messiah is God’s anointed One who was filled with God’s SEVEN FOLD SPIRIT empowering Him to complete His earthly mission and a part of this mission was to bring GOOD NEWS to the POOR.

It is clear from Mark 1:14 that Yeshua indeed proclaimed (announced, declared) the GOSPEL (known as the GOOD NEWS) of GOD the Father.

So let’s first explore what exactly is this GOOD NEWS the Word of God announces to the POOR.

We read about this GOOD NEWS captured in SONGS in the Word of YHVH – we find it in the OLD TESTAMENT called the song of Moses and in the NEW TESTAMENT called the NEW SONG of the Lamb and the NEW SONG of BOTH MOSES, the servant of God and the SONG of the LAMB. So let’s look at it.

The SONG of Moses is found in the Torah in Exodus 15 as well as in Deuteronomy 32.

The SONG we see in Exodus 15 had been sung by the ISRAELITES on THE DAY YHVH their God SAVED them from the Egyptians after crossing the Red Sea and they saw the Egyptians dead on the shore. When ISRAEL saw the MIGHTY DEED that YHVH had performed against their enemies, the Egyptians, they FEARED YHVH, and they BELIEVED in HIM and in His servant Moses (Exodus 14:30-31).

So let’s read this SONG of SALVATION of the ISRAELITES, the people of YHVH in Exodus 15:1-19:

“I will sing to YHVH, for He is highly exalted: the horse and its rider He threw in the sea. Yah (God) is my strength and my SONG, and he has become my SALVATION. This is my God: I will glorify Him; my father’s God: I will exalt Him. YHVH is a WARRIOR; YHVH is HIS NAME.

Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He hurled into the sea. His elite (best) commanders were drowned in the Red Sea. The deep waters covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone. Your right hand, YHVH, is sublimely (magnificently) powerful; Your right hand, YHVH, shatters the foe (the enemy, adversary, opponent). By Your great majesty You bring down Your enemies; You send out Your wrath to consume them like stubble.

With a blast from Your nostrils the waters piled up – the waters stood up like a wall, the depths of the sea became firm ground. The enemy said, ‘I will pursue and overtake, divide the spoil and gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword; my hand will destroy them.’ You blew with your wind (some translations say: Your breath), the sea covered them, they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

Who is like You YHVH, among the mighty? Who is like You, sublime (beautiful, inspiring, magnificent) in HOLINESS (sanctity, purity, sacredness, blessedness), awesome (remarkable, awe-inspiring) in praises (admiration, esteem, reverence, amazement, wonder), working wonders (miracles)?

You reached out with Your right hand: the earth swallowed them. In Your LOVE, You led the people You REDEEMED; in Your strength, You guided (directed, steered) them to Your holy (sanctified, blessed, righteous) abode (dwelling place).

The peoples (the nations) have heard, and they tremble; anguish (distress, grief) takes hold of those living in Philistia; then the chiefs (the rulers, the leaders) of Edom are dismayed (discouraged), trepidation (fear, anxiety) seizes the heads (the leaders) of Moab, all those living in Canaan are melted away (this is speaking of all Israel’s enemies).

Terror and dread fall on them; by the might of Your arm they are still as stone until Your people pass over, YHVH, till the people You PURCHASED pass over (clearly this is Feast of Passover language talking of redemption from the enemy, bought back with BLOOD, later to be the precious BLOOD of our Messiah).

You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain which is Your heritage, the place, YHVH, that You made Your abode (dwelling place). The sanctuary (refuge, shelter, safe haven), YHVH, which Your hands established.

YHVH will REIGN FOREVER and EVER.

For the horses of Pharaoh went with his chariots and with his cavalry (his soldiers) into the sea, but YHVH brought the sea waters back upon them, while the people of ISRAEL walked on dry land in the midst of the sea!”

Then we see another SONG of MOSES in Deuteronomy 32 but this time, it is not a song sang from the JOY of being SAVED from their enemies by YHVH, it is a SONG sang as commanded by YHVH their God because He knew that they would abandon Him and break covenant with Him and serve foreign (small letter) gods of the other nations when they move to take in the promised land. And because of all the evil, YHVH their God will hide His face from them.  And they will be devoured and many calamities (disasters, catastrophes, tragedies) and troubles (dilemmas, predicaments, difficulties, worries, stresses) will come upon them. Therefore this SONG had to be written and taught to the people of ISRAEL (all twelve tribes as including the mixed multitude that chose to leave Egypt with them according to Exodus 12:38) and they had to learn it by heart, so that THIS SONG could be a WITNESS FOR GOD against the people of ISRAEL that they turned away from YHVH their God to worship foreign (small letter) gods. And Moses wrote the SONG that SAME DAY and taught it to the people (read Deuteronomy 31:14-22).

And we then read in Deuteronomy 31:28-30, Moses assembled all the leaders of the tribes and their officials to say these things in their hearing: “…calling heaven and earth to WITNESS against them – because I know that after my death you will become very corrupt (immoral, wicked, depraved, evil, dishonest, fraudulent, fake, false, deceitful) and turn aside from THE WAY I have ordered (YHVH’s WAY based on the TORAH, Genesis to Deuteronomy and summed up in the Ten Commandments), and that DISASTER will come upon you in the acharit-hayamim (literally meaning at the END of DAYS when the world comes to an end), because you will DO what YHVH sees as evil and PROVOKE Him by your DEEDS. Then Moses spoke in the hearing of the WHOLE ASEMBLY of ISRAEL the words of THIS SONG, from beginning to end:”

So we could perhaps say that this SONG served as a WARNING from YHVH for them and their descendants who would be LIVING IN THE LAST DAYS.

So let’s read this SONG in Deuteronomy 32:1-43

“Hear, of heavens, as I speak! Listen, earth, to the words from my mouth! May my teaching fall like rain. May my speech condense like dew, like light rain on blades of grass, or showers on growing plants.

For I will proclaim the Name of YHVH. Come, declare the greatness of our God! The (capital letter) ROCK (this  we know is a reference to Yeshua the Messiah in the Old Testament, read 1 Corinthians 10:4 so to enhance our understanding I am going to insert Yeshua’s name each time the capital letter ROCK is mentioned in this song)! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just (fair, objective). A trustworthy (dependable, reliable, honest) God who does no wrong, He is righteous (moral, ethical, virtuous, worthy, well-meaning, honorable, good) and straight (straightforward, direct, honest).

He is not corrupt; the defect (the weakness, the shortcoming) is in His children, a crooked and perverted (wayward, disobedient, rebellious) generation. You foolish (unwise, reckless, irresponsible, careless, thoughtless, impulsive) people, so lacking in wisdom (understanding, knowledge, insight), is this how you repay YHVH? HE is your FATHER, who made you His! It was He who formed (created) you and prepared (equipped) you!

Remember how the old days were; think of the years through all the ages. Ask your father (earthly father) – he will tell you; your leaders too – they will inform you. When Elyon (the Most High) gave each nation its heritage (inheritance, birth right), when He divided the human race, He assigned the boundaries of peoples (individuals and societies, civilizations) according to ISRAEL’s population ; but YHVH’s share was His OWN people, JACOB (referring to ISRAEL, al twelve tribes, not just the tribe of Juda and the smaller tribe of Benjamin who are the Jews of today, it also includes ALL people grafted into ISRAEL according to Romans 11 by accepting Yeshua the Messiah) His allotted (chosen) heritage.

He found His people in desert country (land), in a howling (violent, harsh), wasted (fruitless) wilderness. He PROTECTED him (referring to ISRAEL) and CARED for him, GUARDED (defended, watch over) him like the pupil of His eye, like an eagle that stirs up her nest, hovers over her young, spreads out her wings, takes them and carries them as she flies.

YHVH alone led His people; no alien (foreign, small letter) god was with him.

He made them ride on the heights of the earth. They ate the produce of the fields. He had them suck honey from rocks and olive oil from crags (cliffs, peaks, mountains), curds from the cows and milk from the sheep, with lambs fattened, rams from Bashan (a district east of the Jordan) and goats, with the finest wheat flour; and you drank sparkling wine from the blood (the juice) of grapes.

But Yeshurun (Jeshurun, meaning the upright one in Hebrew, a poetic name for ISRAEL, symbolizing the nations uprightness/ decency, honesty, trustworthiness, respectability and special relationship with God) grew fat and kicked (you grew fat, thick/ heavy, gross/overweight!) He (Israel) abandoned God his MAKER; he scorned (despised, rejected) the (capital letter) ROCK (Yeshua), his SALVATION. They roused Him to jealousy with alien (foreign small letter) gods, provoked Him with abominations (disgraces, scandals, atrocities, violence, horrors, disgusts, repulsions). They sacrificed to demons, non-gods, (small letter) gods that they had never known, new (small letter) gods that had come up lately, which your ancestors had not feared. You ignored the (capital letter) ROCK (Yeshua) who fathered you, you forgot God, who gave you birth.

YHVH saw and was filled with scorn (contempt, disapproval, dissatisfaction, disappointment) at His sons’ and daughters’ provocation. He said, I will hide My face from them (He will not be with them) and see what will become of them; for they are a perverse (obstinate, inflexible, stubborn) generation, untrustworthy (unreliable, undependable, disloyal) children. They aroused my jealousy with a non-god (demons) and provoked me with their vanities (pride, arrogance, egotism, selfishness, self-importance); I will arouse their jealousy with a non-people (people from other nations) and provoke them with a vile (dreadful, despicable) nation (some translations say a nation with no understanding)

For My anger has been fired up. It burns to the depts. Of Sheol (the realm of the dead), devouring (consuming) the earth and its crops, kindling the very roots of the hills. I will heap disasters (tragedies, catastrophes, calamities, devastation) on them and use ALL My arrows against them.

Fatigued by hunger, they will be consumed by fever (illnesses) and bitter (unpleasant) defeat (downfall); I will send them the fangs of wild beasts, and the poison of reptiles crawling in the dust. Outside, the sword makes parents childless; inside there is panic, as young men and girls alike are slain, sucklings (babies) and graybeards (old men) together.

I consider putting an end to them, erasing their memory from the human race; but I feared the insolence (disrespect) of their enemy, feared that their foes would mistakenly think, ‘We ourselves accomplished this; YHVH had nothing to do with it.’

They are a nation without common sense (intelligence, wisdom), utterly (completely) lacking in discernment. If they were wise (intelligent, clever) they could figure it out and understand their destiny (purpose, calling). After all, how can one chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their (capital letter) ROCK (Yeshua) sells them to their enemies, unless YHVH hands them over? For our enemies have NO rock like our (capital letter) ROCK (Yeshua) – even they can see that!

Rather, their vine is from the vine of Sodom, from the fields of Gomorrah – their grapes are poisonous, their clusters bitter; their wine is snake poison, the cruel venom of vipers (adders, cobras). Isn’t this hidden with Me, sealed in My storehouses?

Vengeance (punishment) and payback are Mine for the time when their foot slips; for the day of their calamity (disaster, tragedy, catastrophe) is coming soon, their doom (fate, destiny) is rushing upon them.

Yes, YHVH will judge His people, taking pity on His servants, when He sees that their strength is gone, that no one is left, slave or free. Then He will ask, ‘Where are their (small letter) gods, the (small letter) rock in whom they trusted? Who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let him get up and help you. Let him protect you! See now that I, yes, I, AM HE; and there is NO god beside Me. I put to death, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal; no one SAVES anyone from My hand!

For I lift up My hand to the heaven and swear, ‘As surely as I AM alive forever, if I sharpen My flashing sword and set My hand to JUDGEMENT, I will render vengeance to My foes, repay those who hate Me. I will make My arrows drunk with blood, My sword will devour flesh – the blood of the slain and the captives, flesh from the wild-haired heads of the enemy.’ (We see this description also in the vison of John in Revelation 19:11-21)

Sing out, you nations, about His people! For He will avenge the blood of His servants. He will render vengeance to His adversaries and make atonement for the land of His people. (Again we also read this in Revelation chapters 19 to 20).

And we read in Deuteronomy 32:44-47 “Moses came and proclaimed all the words of this song in the hearing of the people and of Hosea the son of Nun (this is referring to Joshua who were commissioned by God to take over from Moses after his death). When he had finished speaking all these words to all ISRAEL, he said to them, ‘Take to heart all the words of my TESTIMONY against you today, so that you can use them in charging your children to be careful to OBEY ALL THE WORDS OF THIS TORAH (Genesis to Deuteronomy that Moses had to write down as commanded by YHVH, read Deuteronomy 31:9-27). For this is not a trivial (small insignificant) matter for you; on the contrary, IT IS YOUR LIFE! Through it you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jorden to possess.”

And then we read about the NEW SONG of the LAMB in Revelation chapters 5 and 14.

We read in Revelation 5:9 for the first time of this NEW SONG. Chapter 5 opens in the THRONE ROOM with GOD the Father sitting on the throne with a scroll in His right hand of writing on both sides and sealed with SEVEN SEALS, and a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice: “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or earth was found worthy except for the LION of the TRIBE OF JUDAH, the ROOT of David, WHO had won the right to open the scroll and its seven seals. John then sees the (capital letter) LAMB in front of the throne, appearing to have been slaughtered, having SEVEN HORNS (indicating His divine power and authority) and SEVEN EYES identified as the SEVENFOLD SPIRIT of GOD sent out into all the earth. He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of God the Father sitting on the throne. When He took the scroll, the FOUR LIVING BEINGS (which we read in Revelation 4:6-9 are around God the Father’s throne continuously glorifying Him as YHVH, the HOLY God of heaven’s armies), and the twenty-four elders (whom we read in Revelation 4:4 surrounds God’s throne), and they fell down in front of the LAMB, Each one held a HARP and a BOWL filled with pieces of INCENSE, identified as the PRAYER’s of GOD’s PEOPLE and they (the FOUR LIVING BEINGS and the 24 ELDERS) SANG A NEW SONG.

And then we read this beautiful NEW SONG in Revelation 5:9-10 sung by the four living beings and the 24 elders: “You are worthy to take the scroll and break the seals; because You were slaughtered (crushed, beaten); at the cost of BLOOD You ransomed (redeemed, rescued, delivered) for GOD (the FATHER) persons from EVERY TRIBE, LANGUAGE, PEOPLE and NATION. You made them into a kingdom for GOD (the Father) to rule, priests to serve Him; and they will rule over the earth (also read Revelation 20:4-6). ”

We read in Revelation 5:11-12 they are then joined by a vast number of angels – thousands and thousands, millions and millions. They were all around the throne, the living beings and the elders and they shouted out: “Worthy is the slaughtered LAMB to receive power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and praise!”

An in verses 13-14 they are joined by EVERY CREATURE in heaven, on earth, under the earth and on the sea – yes EVERYTHING in them – saying, “To the (capital letter) One (that is God the Father)  sitting on the throne and to the LAMB belong praise, honor, glory and power FOREVER and EVER! The four living beings said, ‘Amen! And the elders fell down and worshipped.”

Thereafter we read in Revelation chapter 14 about the 144,000 (12,000 from each tribe of ISRAEL as we read in Revelation 7) standing with Yeshua the Messiah on MOUNT ZION (referring to the temple mount and more generally the city of Jerusalem/ the new Jerusalem) with HIS NAME and HIS FATHER’s NAME on their foreheads.  And John then heard a sound from heaven like the sound of RUSHING WATERS and the sound of BOOMING THUNDER; the sound was also like that of a HARPISTS playing on their HARPS. And then we read in verses 3-5 “They were singing a NEW SONG before the throne and before the four living beings and the elders, an no one could learn the SONG except the 144,000 who have been ransomed (redeemed, rescued, delivered) from the world. These are the ones who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins (this meaning they have not committed spiritual idolatry but remained faithful to God); they follow the LAMB wherever He goes; they have been ransomed (redeemed, rescued, delivered) from among humanity as FIRSTFRUITS for God (the Father) and the LAMB; on their lips no lie was found – they are without defect.”

And then we read in verses 6-7 John saw “another angel flying in mid-heaven with everlasting GOOD NEWS to proclaim to those living on the earth – to every nation, tribe, language and people. In a loud voice he said, “Fear God, give Him glory, for the hour has come when He will pass JUDGEMENT! WORHSIP the (capital letter) One who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water!

And then we read about the NEW SONG of BOTH MOSES, the servant of God and the SONG of the LAMB in Revelation chapter 15!

In Revelation 15 John sees seven angels with the seven plagues that are the FINAL ones; because with them, God’s fury is finished. And we read in Revelation 15:2-4 “.I saw what looked like a SEA of GLASS mixed with FIRE. Those defeating the beast, its image and the number of its name were standing by the sea of glass, holding harps which God had given them. They were SINGING the SONG of MOSES, the servant of God (the Father), and the SONG of the LAMB: “Great and wonderful are the things you have done, YHVH, God of heaven’s armies! JUST and TRUE are YOUR WAYS, KING of the nations! YHVH, who will not fear and glorify Your Name? Because You alone are HOLY. All nations will come and worship before You, for Your righteous deeds have been revealed.”

The Jewish Study Bible explains: “Those DEFEATING the beast, its image, and the number of his name are seen standing by the sea of glass just as the ISRAELITES stood by the Red Sea after their Egyptian pursuers were drowned in it, while the Israelites sang the SONG of MOSES as we read in Exodus 15:1-18. Now the SONG is sung by ALL BELIEVERS in YESHUA the MESSIAH from ALL NATIONS who did not worship the beast, its image or its name but remained faithful to YHVH their God.”

Note, this SONG is sung by believers, who stands at the sea of glass which are in the throne room in front of the throne of YHVH as we read in Revelation 4:6. And shortly after this we are seeing the events leading up to the SECOND COMING of Yeshua the Messiah. We read in Revelation chapter 16 to 19 the WAR, called ARMAGEDON unfolding with Yeshua warring against His Father’s enemies. This will result in the antimessiah/ antichrist and the false prophet being thrown into the Lake of Fire. And we know after the thousand year rule of Yeshua the Messiah, Satan who will be bound during the thousand year reign will be let loose for a short while and will again go out and deceive the nations and the Word tells as many as the sand on the seashore will rise up in a WAR against the reign of PEACE of YESHUA in Jerusalem in the WAR called the war of GOG and MAGOG (read Revelation 20:7-10) and it will result their utter destruction and Satan being thrown into the Lake of Fire. And after the GREAT WHITE THRONE Judgement we read in Revelation 20:11-15 every person who ever lived will be raised from the dead and their deeds be judged, all whose names are not written in the LAMBS BOOK of LIFE (all those who chose NOT to believe in Him and NOT to accept the price He paid for sin on our behalf and NOT to follow Him in obedience to the Father and His Word), will be thrown into the Lake of Fire. And the LAST ENEMY, DEATH and SHEOL (the realm of the dead) will be thrown into the Lake of Fire – this is called the SECOND DEATH. And then Yeshua the Messiah will hand the kingdom to God the Father as well as subject Himself to the Father. (read 1 Corinthians 15:20-28).

It is therefore evident that these SONGS are indeed SONGS full of the GOOD NEWS of the wonderful character of our God and His LOVE for and SALVATION (redemption, deliverance) of mankind! And He will take revenge on His enemies and all the evil they did against Him, as well as against His children.
