THE GOSPELS: THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: BEATITUDE 6, BLESSED are the PURE in HEART, for they will SEE GOD, Part 3
31 July 2026
Good day everyone, We are proceeding to study the SERMON of YESHUA on the MOUNT.
We are mainly reading from the Complete Jewish Study Bible – insight for Jews and Christians. We use the Hebrew letters for the name of God, YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh) where the word LORD in English is indicated in capital letters in the Scriptures. The reason being that the Jewish writers removed the vowels in God’s name out of fear of transgressing the third Commandment of taking His Name in vain. And today there is a lot of controversy about the pronunciation of His Name. We also refer to Him as Abba Father and use the Hebrew Name Yeshua the Messiah instead of the English Name Jesus Christ translated from the Greek.
We are still studying the sixth BEATITUDE as written in Matthew 5:8 where Yeshua our Messiah taught: “How BLESSED (meaning happy and fortunate) are the PURE in HEART! For they will SEE God.”
We are studying the Word to understand what it means to have a PURE HEART.
We started studying the meaning of PURITY in Part 1, being a condition of the heart, (the emotions), including the mind, (thought patterns) of a person leading to a life of holiness (living dedicated and set-apart for YHVH our God, reflecting the character and example of Yeshua our Messiah with the guidance of the Holy Spirit), UPRIGHTNESS (living with integrity, fearing God, turning away from evil and following YHVH our God’s ways and will) and RIGHTEOUSNESS (living a life of moral integrity in alignment with God’s Word).
And last week in Part 2 we studied the meaning of IMPURITY and discovered it means being CONTAMINATED, POLUTED, ADULTERATED, UNCLEAN, INFECTED, FILTHY and DIRTY and it is a characteristic of the flesh, the old sinful self.
And today we are going to focus on the HEART since it is the PURE in HEART that will SEE GOD!
The Nelsons’ Foundational Bible Dictionary explains that the Word of God has a wide range of meanings for the HEART.
FIRST, the PHYSICAL HEART, the center of BODILY LIFE and the things that contribute to its HEALTH and STRENGTH (read Psalm 40:8-12, Jude 19:5 and Acts 14:17).
SECOND, the HIGHER RATIONAL, SPIRITUAL activities. The set purpose to do a thing; holding firmly and steadfastly to a purpose; rational activities in THOUGHT, PERCEPTION, UNDERSTANDING, REFLECTING and JUDGING. The SEAT of AFFECTIONS and EMOTIONS as JOY; FEAR; HATRED and LOVE.
THIRD, as an EXPRESSIVE of MORAL CHARACTERISTICS and CONDITIONS. The HARDENING of the HEART; the KEEPING of the HEART because it determines the ISSUES of LIFE, as TRUE of THOUGHTS, WORDS and DEEDS; the SEAT of PASSIONS; for the MORAL GOVERNMENT of LIFE GOD’s LAW is WRITTEN IN THE HEART.
FOURTH, the DEEPER SPIRITUAL LIFE. The DWELLING PLACE of GOD the FATHER, the MESSIAH and the HOLY SPIRIT; where the LOVE of GOD is felt, and HIS PEACE is realized; where we ENJOY the DEEPER COMMUNION with GOD.
There is a connection between the HEART and the MIND and both are considered to be part of the SOUL and therefore have IMMORTALITY, meaning, the day we die, what have been stored up in our hearts and minds will go with us, either to PARADISE where believers await the SECOND COMING of YESHUA our MESSIAH being part of the FIRST RESURECTION, or to the PLACE of the DEAD (Sheol/ the underworld) where unbelievers await the SECOND RESURECTION to appear at the FINAL WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT of God where ALL PEOPLE will be JUDGED in accordance to the FREE WILL DECISIONS we made based on what we chose to store up in our hearts and minds while living on earth.
So if we want to SEE GOD the FATHER and LIVE with HIM and the LAM (Yeshua our Messiah) it is extremely important to ENSURE our HEARTS are PURE.
So let’s learn more about what the Word teaches about the HUMAN HEART.
In 1st Samuel 16, Samuel was instructed by God to anoint the new king elected by YHVH in the place of Saul. He thought it was Eliab, the eldest brother of David, but God said to Samuel in verse 7: “Don’t pay attention to how he looks or how tall he is, because I have rejected (not chosen) him. YHVH doesn’t SEE the way humans see – humans look at the outward appearance, but YHVH looks at the HEART.”
And in Jeremiah 17:10 we read: “I, YHVH, SEARCH (examine/ inspect/ observe) the HEART; I TEST INNER MOTIVATIONS (drives/ motives/ intentions); in order to GIVE to everyone what his ACTIONS and CONDUCT (behavior) deserve.”
We also know this from Deuteronomy 8:2-3, when Moses reminded the people: “You are to REMEMBER everything of the WAY in which YHVH LED you these forty (40) years in the desert, HUMBLING and TESTING you in order to KNOW what was in your HEART – whether you would OBEY HIS mitzvoth (His Commandments) or not. He HUMBLED you, allowing you to become hungry, and then fed you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had ever known, to make you understand that a person does not LIVE on food alone but on everything WORD that comes from the MOUTH of YHVH.” And in verse 16, the reason for testing them is indicated as: “in order to DO you GOOD in the end…” We know that Yeshua our Messiah used Deuteronomy 8:3 to resist Satan when He was led by the Holy Spirit to be TESTED in the desert for forty (40) days, read Luke 4:4.
We read in Genesis 6:1-4 of the Nephilim (meaning the fallen ones/ fallen angels) that were on the earth and mingled with the woman on earth causing the entire world to fall and we read the extend of it in verses 5-6: “YHVH saw that the people on earth were very wicked (morally very bad), that ALL the imaginings (thoughts, dreams, ideas) of their HEARTS were ALWAYS of evil (sinful, malicious/ hateful/ spiteful/ mean, criminal/ illegal/ wrong/ unlawful/ lawless, immoral/ depraved/ dishonest, foul/ vulgar/ obscene/ indecent) ONLY. YHVH regretted that He had made humankind on the earth; it grieved His heart.”
In Jeremiah chapter 4 we read about the warning of the invasion of the enemy into the Southern Kingdom of Judah and Benjamin and in verse 14 we see the CALL of YHVH to: “WASH the EVIL (sinful, malicious/ hateful/ spiteful/ mean, criminal/ illegal/ wrong/ unlawful/ lawless, immoral/ depraved/ dishonest, foul/ vulgar/ obscene/ indecency) from your HEARTS, JERUSALEM, so that you can be SAVED.”
And in Jeremiah 17:9 we are WARNED: “The HEART is more deceitful (untrustworthy/ unreliable, undependable) than anything else and morally sick. Who can fathom (understand, comprehend) it? This means our emotions and thoughts, not based on the TRUTH of God’s WORD, are totally unreliable as a source to base our decisions on.
The Jewish Study Bible explains: The outward sins of idolatry, harlotry, and other kinds of iniquity are ROOTED (entrenched/ deep-seated, engrained/ fixed, imbedded/ implanted) in a more fundamental problem and are simply a reflection of a SINFUL (wicked, corrupt/ dishonest/ fraudulent/ deceitful, immoral/ depraved) HEART.
And in Matthew 12:34-36 Yeshua said to the Pharisees who accused Him of driving demons out with the power of Ba’al-Zibbul, meaning the ruler of the demons, alluding to Satan: “Your snakes! How can you who are evil say anything good? For the MOUTH speaks what OVERFLOWS from the HEART. The GOOD PERSON brings forth GOOD things from his STORE of GOOD things (in his HEART, including his MIND, what is in his THOUGHTS), and the EVIL PERSON brings forth EVIL THINGS from his SOTRE of EVIL. Moreover, I tell you this: on the DAY of JUDGEMENT people will have to GIVE ACCOUNT for EVERY CARELESS WORD they have spoken; for your own WORDS you will be acquitted (found not guilty), and by your OWN WORDS you will be CONDEMNED (sentenced). Also read Luke 6:45.
And in Matthew 15:18-20 Yeshua told them: “…what comes out of your MOUTH is actually coming from your HEART. For out of the HEART (including the MIND) come forth wicked THOUGHTS, murder, adultery and other kinds of sexual immorality, theft, lies, slanders (please note these are all transgressions of God’s COMMANDMENTS). These are what MAKE a PERSON UNCLEAN…”
Paul says in Titus 1:15-16 “To all who are themselves PURE, everything is PURE. But to those who are DEFILED (whose PURITY is damaged/ desecrated/ spoiled/ impaired/ ruined/ decayed) and (who are) without TRUST (faith), nothing is pure – even their MINDS (their thoughts, including their HEARTS) and CONSCIENCES (their moral sense of right and wrong) have been DEFILED (damaged/ desecrated/ spoiled/ impaired/ ruined/ decayed). They claim to KNOW GOD, but with their ACTIONS they DENY HIM (they disagree with Him). They are detestable (despicable/ disgraceful/ shameful) and DISOBEDIENT (noncompliant, rebellious/ insubordinate, wayward); they have PROVED (demonstrated, verified/ confirmed) themselves unfit to DO anything GOOD.”
SO HOW DO WE KEEP OUR HEARTS PURE AND FOCUSSED ON YHVH OUR GOD?
We read in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 what will keep our and our children’s HEARTS PURE and on the RIGHT TRACK, namely:
- “Sh’ma (hear and listen) Yisra’el (Israel)! ADONAI (YHVH) Eloheinu (our God), ADONAI echad (Hear, Israel! YHVH our God, YHVH is ONE);
- you are to LOVE YHVH your God with ALL your HEART, ALL your BEING (the NIV says: with all your SOUL) and ALL your RESOURCES (the NIV says: all your STRENGTH). This meaning our LOVE for GOD should be wholehearted and single-minded.
- These WORDS, which I am ordering you today, are to be ON your HEART (reminding us of the NEW COVENANT in Jeremiah 31:31-33 also mentioned in Hebrews 8:10 and 10:16 and therefore we see it was ALWAYS God’s intention that HIS COMMANDMENTS should be WRITTEN on our HEARTS and in our MINDS);
- And you are to TEACH them carefully to your CHILDREN. You are to TALK about them (YHVH’s Commandments) when you sit at home, when you are travelling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
- TIE them on your HAND as a sign (indicating we should do His Word), put them at the front of a headband around your FOREHEAD (indicating we should have His Word in our MINDS, therefore in our THOUGHTS),
- And WRITE them on the DOOR-FRAMES of your HOUSE and on your GATES (indicating our houses and cities should be managed in accordance to His Word).”
Deuteronomy 6:4-6 explains to us the NATURE of GOD’s COVENANT (agreement, contract, pledge) and the Jewish Study Bible explains it as follows: the fundamental function of the covenant was to establish a community of interest between the king and his vassals (his subordinates). Covenant thus implies COMMUNITY – the forming of common customs, common views, and a common life. This means an intimate sharing of life, nature and custom, where the wills of the contracting parties ultimately become identical. The COMMONNESS OF WILL implied in the COVENANT showed that the CONTRACTING PARTIES had UNITED for a COMMON AIM (goal, purpose), that they had become part of a CLOSE UNION. At its core, LOVE forms the HEART of the COVENANT RELATIONSHIP. The COVENANT becomes the FOUNDATION of the RELATIONSHIP. There had been a powerful demonstration of YHVH’s LOVE, seen in Exodus. LOVE and GRATITUDE were to permeate ALL of LIFE and the THINKING of those under the COVENANT. In fact, Deuteronomy chapters 5 to 11 can be seen as an emphasis on WHOLEHEARTED LOVE toward GOD, stressing not the ABILITY TO DO but on the WIL to FULFIL COVENANT OBLIGATIONS (duties, responsibilities, requirements). In Deuteronomy 6:4-6, the SHEMA provides the expression of this WHOLEHEARTED LOVE, which was EXPECTED as ISRAEL’s RESPONSE (much like we would pledge our LOVE on our wedding day to the partner we are entering into a marriage covenant). This passage in Deuteronomy 6:4-6 calls for EXCLUSIVE DEVOTION and COMMITMENT to YHVH alone. A LOVE expressed through one’s ENTIRE BEING (heart and mind) and PERSONALITY (character/ nature). It also involves a TOTAL PATTERN of LIFE, your LIFESTYLE. So here in Deuteronomy 6 it is already clear that ISRAEL enjoys God’s PROMISES of HIS LOVE and MERCY and it is LOVE, not LAW that forms the CORE of the COVENANT RELATONSHIP between God and His people. ISRAEL is therefore INSTRUCTED to PERFORM YHVH’s COMMANDMENTS in LOVE for HIM just as we are still today instructed as we read in John 14:15 as well as 1st John 5:3. There is a huge difference in acting out of LOVE, therefore willingly (freely, eagerly, wholeheartedly) and acting out of obligation (compulsion/ force/ pressure) and therefore unwillingly (reluctantly, half-heartedly). And therefore Yeshua our Messiah spells it out to us in John 14:20-23 IF WE LOVE HIM, we WILL OBEY HIS WORD and HE and the FATHER WILL LOVE US and DWELL WITH and IN US!
We see Joshua giving the tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh the following advice, to have God’s REST in the land given by Him to them in chapter 22:5, saying:
“Only take GREAT CARE to OBEY the mitzvah (the Commandments) and the Torah (Genesis to Deuteronomy) which Moses the servant of YHVH gave you –
- to LOVE YHVH your GOD, FOLLOW ALL HIS WAYS, OBSERVE HIS mitzvoth (HIS COMMANDMENTS),
- CLING (cleave, hold on tightly) TO HIM, and
- SERVE HIM with ALL your HEART and BEING (your SOUL including your MIND, your THOUGHTS and your FREE WILL)”.
The Jewish Study Bible again explains: The precept (principle, teaching, guideline) to OBEY (submit, conform) and FOLLOW ALL of GOD’s WAYS means that in EVERY ASPECT of LIFE the observant (watchful, wide-awake) should SEEK to IMITATE YHVH the CREATOR. And John 1:1-10 tells us YESHUA our MESSIAH IS THE CREATOR and we know HE came to earth to SET US an EXAMPLE of HOW TO OBEY GOD the FATHER!
Again Joshua told ISRAEL in chapter 24:23 and also to us as believers today what to DO, namely: “PUT AWAY the foreign (small letter) gods you have among you (small letter gods consists of anything we love more than YHVH our GOD, put it away), and TURN your HEARTS to YHVH, the GOD of ISRAEL.”
And we read in Jeremiah 29:13-14 YHVH saying to the tribe of Judah and Benjamin (the Southern Kingdom) who went into exile in Babylon due to their disobedience: “When you SEEK ME, you will FIND ME, provided you SEEK ME WHOLEHEARTEDLY (totally, enthusiastically, passionately, committedly); and I WILL LET you FIND ME, says YHVH. Then I will reverse your exile. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have driven you, says YHVH, and bring you back to the place which I exiled you from.”
And Joel chapter 2 is a serious call to repentance before the DAY of JUDGEMENT of YHVH during the SECOND COMING of YESHUA the MESSIAH and we read in verses 12-13: “Yet, even now, says YHVH, TURN TO ME WITH ALL YOUR HEART (totally, committedly), with FASTING, WEEPING and LAMENTING (sorrow/ remorse/ regret). TEAR your HEART, not your garments (meaning have sincere/ heartfelt remorse/ regret of your sins); and TURN to YHVH your God. For He is MERICFUL and COMPASIONATE, SLOW to anger, RICH IN GRACE, and willing to change His mind about disaster.”
And in Ezekiel 36:25-27 we read a latter day prophecy saying to the HOUSE of ISRAEL (that is the Northern Kingdom, the twelve tribes under Ephraim who were scattered among the nations due to their continued gross idolatry): “For I will take you among the nations, gather you from all countries, and return you to your own soil. Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your uncleanness and from all your idols. I WILL GIVE you a NEW HEART and put a NEW spirit inside you; I WILL TAKE THE STONY HEART OUT of your flesh and GIVE you a NEW HEART of FLESH (a soft pliable heart). I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT INSIDE you and CAUSE you to LIVE by MY LAWS, RESPECT MY RULINGS and OBEY THEM.”
David gives us the following confirmation and guidelines in Psalm 19:8-14
- “The Torah of YHVH (His instructions in Genesis to Deuteronomy) is PERFECT (faultless, flawless), RESTORING (repairing) the INNER PERSON (the soul consisting of the heart/ emotions, the mind/ the thoughts and ability to make sound decisions and the spirit). The INSTRUCTION of YHVH (therefore His Torah) is SURE (unquestionable, undisputable, certain), making WISE the thoughtless (the inconsiderate, unkind, insensitive, careless, the selfish).
- The PRECEPTS (principles, teachings, rules, guidelines) of YHVH are RIGHT (correct, true, accurate), REJOICING (satisfying) the HEART. The mitzvah (the Commandments) of YHVH is PURE, ENLIGHTENING the EYES (giving insight/ clarification, understanding).
- The FEAR of YHVH is CLEAN, ENDURING FOREVER. The RULINGS (decisions, rulings, verdicts) of YHVH are TRUE (correct, accurate, right), they are RIGHTEOUS ALTOGETHER, more DESIRABLE than GOLD, than much fine gold, also SWEETER than HONEY or drippings from the honeycomb.
- Through them your servant IS WARNED (cautioned, advised/ guided, counselled/ instructed); in OBEYING (following, observing) them is GREAT REWARD.”
- Who can one discern (detect, recognize) UNINTENTIONAL (accidental, unplanned) SINS? CLEANSE me from HIDDEN (concealed, secret, unknown) FAULTS (errors, mistakes). Also KEEP your servant from PRESUMPTUOUS (arrogant, rude, disrespectful) SINS, so that they won’t control me. Then I will be BLAMELESS and FREE of great offense (wrongdoing, transgressions, violations).
- May the WORDS of my mouth and the THROUGHTS of my HEART be acceptable in YOUR PRESENCE, YHVH, my ROCK and REDEEMER.”
And the Jewish Study Bible explains the following: King David teaches that Torah is PERFECT, meant to display both God’s REVEALED WILL and ASPECTS of HIS DIVINE NATURE. Torah is not just a list of rules that one must follow; for as PURE LIGHT, it emanates from God Himself and is given with both PRECISION and AUTHORITY. Fear and reverence (respect, devotion, worship) are the correct response to God’s holy WORD. The PRECEPTS of God are considered RIGHT just as a judicial (legal court) decision is right, it stands fast and cannot be shaken. Since TORAH contains LOVING INSTRUCTIONS that IS PERFECT, through it:
- the OBEDIENT (those who comply with it) are RESTORED (made whole),
- made WISE, GIVEN REASON for REJOICING and
- PROVIDED ENLIGHTMENT (insight and understanding) beyond this world.
And in Psalm 24:3-5 David asks and answers the question: “Who may go up to the mountain of YHVH? Who can stand in HIS HOLY PLACE? Those with CLEAN HANDES and PURE HEARTS, who don’t make vanities (pride, conceit, arrogance/ superiority, self-importance) the purpose of their lives or swear oaths just to deceive (betray). They will RECEIVE a BLESSING from YHVH and JUSTICE from GOD, who SAVES them. Such is the character of those who SEEK HIM, of Jacob (Israel), who SEEKS YOUR FACE.”
In Psalm 73:1 we read: “How GOOD GOD is to ISRAEL, to those who are PURE IN HEART! And in Psalm 119:1-3 we read: “How happy (blessed and fortunate) are those whose WAY of LIFE is BLAMELESS, who LIVE by the TORAH of YHVH (His instruction in Genesis to Deuteronomy)! How happy (blessed and fortunate) are those who OBSERVE HIS INSTRUCTION (His Torah, His teaching, training, coaching), who SEEK HIM WHOLEHEARTEDLY (totally, enthusiastically, passionately, committedly)!
And in Psalm 86:11-13 David prays: “YHVH, TEACH me YOUR WAY, so that I can LIVE BY YOUR TRUTH; make me SINGLE-HEARTED (totally focused only on You, Your Word and Your will), so that I can FEAR YOUR NAME. I will thank You, YHVH my God, with my WHOLE HEART; and I will GLORIFY YOUR NAME forever. For YOUR GRACE toward me is SO GREAT! You have RESCUED me from the lowest parts of Sheol (the place of the dead).
And again in Psalm 119 David gives us many guidelines to LIVE with a PURE HEART namely:
- I thank You with a SINCERE (genuine, honest) HEART as I LEARN YOUR RIGHTEOUS RULINGS (decisions, pronouncements, verdicts). I will OBSERVE YOUR LAWS (rules, commandments, regulations); (verses 7-8)
- How can a young man KEEP his WAY PURE? By GUARDING IT ACCORDING to YOUR WORD (verse 9).
- I SEEK YOU with ALL my HEART, don’t let me stray from Your mitzvoth (Your Commandments) (verse 10).
- I TREASURE YOUR WORD in my HEART, so that I won’t sin against You (verse 11).
- Blessed are You YHVH! TEACH me YOUR LAWS (rules, commandments, regulations) (verse 12).
- I PROCLAIM (declare) with my MOUTH ALL the RULINGS (decisions, pronouncements, verdicts) YOU have spoken (verse 13).
- I REJOICE in the WAY of YOUR INSTRUCTION (Your Torah, Your teaching, training, coaching) more than in any kind of wealth (verse 14).
- I will MEDITATE (think) on YOUR PRECEPTS (principles, teachings, rules, guidelines) and KEEP my EYES on YOUR WAYS (verse 15).
- I will FIND my DELIGHT in YOUR REGULATIONS (rules, guidelines, principles). I will not forget YOUR WORD (verse 16).
- OPEN my EYES, so I will SEE the WONDERS (miracles, marvels) of YOUR TORAH (Your instructions in Genesis to Deuteronomy) (verse 18). Also read Luke 24:31 & 45 where Yeshua, the risen Messiah opened the disciples MINDS so that they could UNDERSTAND the Tanakh (the Old Testament, including the Torah).
- Also YOUR INSTRUCTIONS (commands, guidelines, teachings) are my DELIGHT; they are my COUNSELORS (giving guidance/ direction/ help) (verse 24).
- BEND my HEART toward Your INSTRUCTIONS (commands, guidelines, teachings) and not toward selfish gain (verse 36).
And in Psalm 119:37 we read: “TURN my EYES AWAY from worthless things; with YOUR WAYS, GIVE me LIFE.” The road to the human HEART, goes through the EYES, considered as the windows of the SOUL (the pathway to the heart and mind). And in Matthew 6:22-23 Yeshua our Messiah explained: “The EYE is the LAMP of the BODY. So if you have a “GOOD EYE” your WHOLE BODY will be FULL of LIGHT; but if you have an “EVIL EYE” your WHOLE BODY will be FULL of DARKNESS. If then, the LIGHT IN you is DARKNESS, how great is that darkness!” In the Luke 11:34-35 version He warns: “So take CARE that the LIGHT IN you is not darkness!” And therefore, if we want to maintain a PURE HEART, we have to be careful what we allow to enter our EYES, and it may be a good idea to follow Job’s advice to himself in Job 31:1 to make a COVENANT with our EYES not to let them dwell on evil!
And we read in Proverbs 23:26 “My son, GIVE ME your HEART; let your EYES OBSERVE MY WAYS.”
And Proverbs 3:1-12 teaches us:
- “…, don’t forget MY TEACHING (instruction), KEEP MY COMMANDS (instructions, guidelines) IN YOUR HEART; for they will add to you MANY DAYS, YEARS of LIFE and PEACE (verses 1-2).
- Do not let GRACE (receiving His mercy and showing mercy to others) and TRUTH (HIS WORD) leave you – bind them around your neck; WRITE them on the TABLET of your HEART. Then you will receive favor and esteem in the SIGHT of God and of people (verses 3-4). Also read 2nd Corinthians 3:3.
- TRUST (have faith and confidence) in YHVH with ALL your HEART; do not rely on your own understanding. In ALL your WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM; then HE will level your paths (verses 5-6).
- Don’t be conceited (self-important, proud, arrogant) about your own wisdom (understanding, insight, knowledge); but FEAR YHVH, and TURN from evil (sin, transgressions against His Word and Will). This will bring HEALTH to your body and GIVE STRENGTH to your BONES (verses 7-8). Also read Romans 12:16.
- HONOR YHVH with your WEALTH and with the FIRSTFRUITS of ALL your INCOME. Then your granaries (warehouses, storerooms) will be FILLED and your vats overflow with NEW WINE (verses 9-10).
- …don’t despise YHVH’s DISCIPLINE or resent HIS REPROOF (chastisement, reprimand, correction); for YHVH CORRECTS those HE LOVES like a father who DELIGHTS in his son (verses 11-12)”. Also read 1st Corinthians 11:32, Hebrews 12:5 and Revelation 3:19.
And in Proverbs 4:20-27 we are taught:
- “My son, PAY ATTENTION to what I am SAYING; incline your ear to MY WORDS. Don’t let them out of your sight. KEEP THEM DEEP IN YOUR HEART (in your THOUGHTS); for they are LIFE to those who FIND THEM and HEALTH to their WHOLE BEING (their body, soul and spirit) (verses 20-22).
- Above everything else, GUARD your HEART (including your MIND, your THOUGHTS); for it I the SOURCE of LIFE’s CONSEQUENCES (verse 23).
- KEEP CROOKED (twisted, perverse, sick, bitter/ hostile/harsh, cruel/ unkind) SPEECH (language, talking) out of your MOUTH, banish (expel, drive out) deceit (dishonesty) from your LIPS (verse 24)”. We also read in Revelation 14:4-5, about the 144,000, 12,000 people from each of the TWLEVE TRIBES of ISRAEL indicated at the FIRSTFRUTIS, ransomed from among humanity for God and the LAMB; on their lips no lie was found – they were without defect. REMEMBER LIES are a characteristic of Satan, and he is indicated by Yeshua in John 8:44 as the father of lies, the inventor of the lie.
- Let your EYES look straight ahead, FIX your GAZE on what lies in front of you. LEVEL the PATH of your FEET, let ALL your WAYS be PROPERTLY PREPARED (equipped/ armed); then deviate neither right nor left; and KEEP your FOOT far from evil (verses 25-27).
And in Proverbs 7:1-3 we are instructed:
- My son, KEEP MY WORDS, STORE UP MY COMMANDS with you (verse 1).
- OBEY MY COMMANDS, and LIVE; GUARD MY TEACHING like the pupil of your eye (verse 2).
- BIND them on your FINGERS (make sure you DO them); (verse 3a).
- WRITE them on the TABLET of your HEART (engrain them in your heart and mind/ thoughts to always remember them and act accordingly)” (verse 3b).
And Proverbs 10:8 tells us: “WISE-HEARTED people take orders,…” And Proverbs 22:11 says: “He who LOVES the PURE-HEARTED and is gracious in speech will have the KING as his friend.”
Proverbs 27:19 NIV says: “As WATER reflects the FACE, so one’s LIFE REFLECTS the HEART.”
We read a WARNING in Ecclesiastes 11:9-10 to young people saying:
- “Young person, if you spend your youth only having fun, if you use your early years just to entertain yourself, if you follow your HEART (your own THOUGHTS) as you LIFE your LIFE, and let your EYES be your GUIDE; UNDERSTAND that for these things GOD will BRING JUDGEMENT.
- Therefore, REMOVE ANGER from your HEART; and KEEP from HARMING your BODY; for neither adolescence (the teenage years), nor youth (early life) has any lasting value (eternal worth).”
Also read Paul’s advice to the young Timothy in 1st Timothy 6:11-12 as well as 2nd Timothy 2:22.
In John 17:17 Yeshua our Messiah prayed to God the Father to set HIS DISCIPLES APART for HOLINESS by means of the TRUTH of HIS WORD.
And in Acts 15:7-9 Peter reminds his Jewish brothers (people form the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, the Southern Kingdom) that God chose him to take the GOOD NEWS to the Gentiles (people not from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, referring specifically to Cornelius and his family who had been baptized by Peter on instruction of God) and then Peter explained to them in verses 8-9: “And God, who KNOWS the HEART, bore them witness by GIVING the Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) to them, just as He did to us; that is, He made no distinction between us and them, but CLEANSED (washed, purified) THEIR HEARTS by TURST (faith).”
And Paul tells believers in Romans 6:19 “For just as you used to offer your various parts as slaves to IMPURITY and LAWLESSNESS, which leads to more lawlessness; so now offer your various parts as slaves to RIGHTEOUSNESS, which leads to BEING MADE HOLY, SET APART FOR GOD.”
And we know in Romans 12:2 Paul calls us to KEEP LETTING ourselves be TRANSFORMED by RENEWING our MIND (the way we think) by the WORD of GOD. And in Romans 13:11-4 Paul tells believers to take notice of the end times we are living in and to “put aside the deeds of darkness and ARM ourselves with the WEAPONS of LIGHT” and “LIVE PROPERLY, as people do in the daytime” clothing ourselves “with the Master Yeshua the Messiah;” and not wasting our time thinking about how to provide for the sinful desires of our old nature. Also read 1st Corinthians 6:20, Galatians 5:24 and Ephesians 4:20-24.
In 2nd Corinthians 6:6 Paul confirms that they (the apostles bringing the GOOD NEWS to people) commend themselves by PURITY and in chapter 7:1 he calls believers to, due to the promises we have: …let us PURIFY ourselves from everything that can defile either body or spirit, and STRIVE, to be COMPLETELY HOLY, out of reverence (respect, devotion) for God.” And in 2nd Corinthians 11:2 Paul informs believers that he promised to present them as a PURE VIRGIN in MARRIAGE to your ONE HUSBAND, the MESSIAH.” Also read 1st Thessalonians 4:3-8.
And then we read in Paul’s prayer for believers in Philippians 1:9-11 “And this is my PRAYER: that your LOVE may more and more overflow in fullness of knowledge and depth of discernment, so that you will be able to determine what is best and thus be PURE and without blame for the DAY of MESSIAH – to the GLORY and PRAISE of GOD (the Father). Also read 1st Thessalonians 4:3-8 and 5:23.
And in 1st Timothy 1:5 Paul says:
“The PURPOSE of this order is to
- PROMOTE LOVE FORM A CLEAN HEART,
- form a GOOD CONSCIENCE and
- from SINCERE (genuine, honest) TRUST (faith).”
And in Titus 2:11-14 Paul says in his letter: “For God’s GRACE, which brings DELIVERANCE, has appeared to ALL people (that is Yeshua our Messiah).
- It TEACHES us to renounce (reject, forsake/ abandon/ leave) godlessness (the absence of reverence and faith in God the creator) and worldly pleasures (the things of the old nature), and
- to LIVE SELF-CONTROLES, UPRIGHT and GODLY LIVED now, in this age;
- while continuing to expect the blessed fulfilment of our certain HOPE, which is the appearing of the Sh’kinah (the Divine Presence) of our GREAT GOD (the Father) and the appearing of our DELIVERER, YESHUA the MESSIAH (alluding to the SECOND COMING of MESSIAH YESHUA). He gave Himself up on our behalf in order to FREE (ransom) us from all violation of Torah (from all iniquity and all lawlessness) and PURIFY for Himself a people who would BE HIS OWN, EAGER TO DO GOOD.”
In Hebrews 9:14 & 10:22 we are told the BLOOD of the MESSIAH, who, through the ETERNAL SPIRIT, offered Himself to GOD (the Father) as a sacrifice without blemish, will PURIFY our CONSCIENCE from works (actions) that lead to death, so that we can SERVE the LIVING GOD!” Also read Hebrews 13:18.
John explains how it works in 1st John 1:7-9 saying: “…if we are WALKING in the LIGHT, as HE is in the LIGHT (in accordance to His example to us in His Word), then we have fellowship with each other, and the BLOOD of HIS SON YESHUA PURIFIES us from sin. If we claim not to have sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the TRUTH is not in us. If we ACKNOWLEDGE our sins, then, since He is TRUSTWORTHY and JUST, HE WILL FROGIVE them and PURIFY us from ALL WRONDOING.
To help us understand it, David serves as a good example. He is described in the Word as a man after God’s HEART but we know David was also a sinner who committed serious sins. But David did not commit and keep on committing INTENTIONAL (deliberate, premeditated) sin after being confronted with his sin, rather he IMMEDIATELY admitted his sin and repented of it with a broken heart and TURNED from his sin. Psalm 51 serves as an example of his repentance before God.
And Peter explains it in 1st Peter 1:22-23 saying: “Now that you have PURIFIED yourselves by OBEYING the TRUTH, so that you have a SINCERE LOVE for your brothers (fellow believers), LOVE each other DEEPLY, with ALL your HEART. You have been BORN AGAIN not from some seed that will decay, but from one that cannot decay, through the LIVING WORD of GOD (the Father) that LASTS FOREVER.”
