THE GOSPELS: THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: BEATITUDE 5, BLESSED are those who SHOW MERCY for they will be SHOWN MERCY, Part 2

We are proceeding to study the SERMON of YESHUA on the MOUNT.
We are mainly reading from the Complete Jewish Study Bible – insight for Jews and Christians. We use the Hebrew letters for the name of God, YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh) where the word LORD in English is indicated in capital letters in the Scriptures. The reason being that the Jewish writers removed the vowels in God’s name out of fear of transgressing the third Commandment of taking His Name in vain. And today there is a lot of controversy about the pronunciation of His Name. We also refer to Him as Abba Father and use the Hebrew Name Yeshua the Messiah instead of the English Name Jesus Christ translated from the Greek.
We are studying the fifth BEATITUDE in Matthew 5:7 where Yeshua our Messiah taught: “How BLESSED (meaning happy and fortunate) are those who show MERCY! For they will be shown MERCY.”
We are focusing on what the WORD teaches us on MERCY.
So far we have learned that:
- We must GIVE MERCY to other people, if we want to RECEIVE MERCY from God.
- MERCY is defined as God’s undeserved kindness and compassion towards humanity. GRACE is defined as God’s undeserved FAVOR. Mercy and Grace are therefore closely related but distinct in that MERCY withholds the punishment that we deserves as sinful human beings and God’s GRACE gives us the GOOD that we do not deserve. And we need both God’s MERCY and GRACE to BE SAVED.
- MERCY is part of GOD’s CHARACTER. He is described in the Word as MERCIFUL (compassionate, kind-hearted, forgiving), slow to anger and rich in GRACE. He does not treat us as our sins deserve or pay us back for our offences, because HIS MERCY toward those who fear Him is as far above earth as heaven. He has REMOVED our sins from us as far as the east is from the west. Just as a father has COMPASSION on his children, YHVH has COMPASSION on those who fear Him (this fear means choosing to obey Him and not sinning intentionally against Him). For He understands how we are made, He remembers that we are dust. But the MERCY of YHVH on those who fear Him is from ETERNITY past to ETERNITY future, and HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS extends to his children’s children provided they KEEP HIS COVENANT and remember to FOLLOW HIS PRECEPTS (laws, principles, guidelines, instructions).
And today we are focusing on:
GOD’s THRONE of MERCY and GRACE
MERCY cannot exist without JUDGEMENT
Judgement is defined in the Nelsons’ Foundational Bible Dictionary as discerning between right and wrong; also, the punishment for wrongdoing. God is the JUDGE of all the earth, and the only one who is able to judge perfectly (this is because only He knows everything). However, humans have some capacity for JUDGING between good and evil (based on God’s Word), and God holds us accountable to use this judgement. Justice is defined as the practice and maintenance of what is good and right, upholding what is just (fair, impartial, unbiased). God tells us in His WORD that He requires of us to “DO JUSTLY, to LOVE MERCY, and to WALK HUMBLY with Him.
JUSTICE is therefore the JUDGEMENT between RIGHT and WRONG and between GOOD and EVIL, and MERCY recognizes where God’s JUSTCE and HIS LAWS have been broken and where WRONG has been done, but nonetheless CHOOSES to withhold the DESERVED JUDGEMENT.
MERCY, GRACE and TRUTH cannot be separated from each other. GOD’s WORD is the TRUTH, therefore it is HIS TORAH as depicted in Genesis to Deuteronomy, summed up in the TEN COMMANDMENTS and PROPHESIED by the PROPHETS, and SALVATION through YESHUA the MESSIAH (who is the WORD) as described in the GOPELS and explained in the NEW TESTAMENT LETTERS of the apostles. And without HIS MERCY, no one can be saved. Psalm 85:4-10 explains it like follows: “RESTORE us, GOD of our SALVATION…SHOW us Your GRACE, YHVH; GRANT us Your SALVATION…For He will SPEAK PEACE to His holy ones – but only if they don’t relapse into folly (foolishness). His SALVATION is near for those who FEAR Him, so that glory will be in our land. GRACE (the KJV says MERCY) and TRUTH have met together; JUSTICE and PEACE have KISSED each other. TRUTH springs up from the earth, and JUSTICE looks down from heaven…JUSTICE will WALK before Him and make HIS footsteps a PATH.” This is a beautiful picture of God’s LOVE, RIGHTEOUSNESS, FAITHFULNESS, COMPASSION and FAIRNESS.
FAIR treatment requires that MERCY guides JUSTICE. MERCY asks KINDNESS even when RULES are needed. It helps BALANCE TRUTH with LOVE. People are to be treated JUSTLY (meaning in according to God’s RIGHTEOUSS LAW, HIS TORAH, Genesis to Deuteronomy, summed up in the TEN COMMANDMENTS) but also help each other with KINDNESS when we fall. It is therefore PURSUING FAIRNESS (justice, equality) with COMPASSION (concern, kindness).
Messiah Yeshua tells the Torah teachers (teachers of Genesis to Deuteronomy including the Ten Commandments) and the Pharisees in Matthew 23:23 “Woe (grief, calamity, trouble) to you hypocritical (insincere, twofaced, false) Torah-teachers and Pharisees! You pay your tithes of mint and dill and cumin; but you have neglected the weightier matters of the Torah – JUSTICE, MERCY, TRUST (FAITH). These are the things you should have attended to – without neglecting the others!”. So this was the problem with their application of God’s LAW, they applied the LAW of GOD (the Torah) without JUSTICE (fairness, reasonableness), MERCY (compassion and kindness) and TRUST (faith).
It is strange that they did not understand the weightier matters of the TORAH namely JUSTICE, MERCY and TRUST (FAITH) as pointed out by Yeshua our Messiah because they were trained in the TORAH (Genesis to Deuteronomy) and the PROPHETS and still they did not understand GOD’s JUSTICE, including HIS LOVE and MERCY. But we also know in today’s time that KNOWLEDGE alone is not enough to know the TRUTH, we need to KNOW and LOVE the GOD of TRUTH by OBEYING HIS COMMANDMENTS (therefore having FAITH in Him and being FAITHFUL to HIM) before He will reveal HIMSELF to us (Read Yeshua our Messiah’s words on this in John 14:21).
THE TORAH and THE PROPHETS instruct on JUSTICE, MERCY and FAITH Examples of this is the Book of Deuteronomy specifying the IMPORTANCE of the GOD’s LAW of LOVE by telling us how GOD wants to be LOVED and how He expects us to LOVE ourselves and other people. We read in Deuteronomy 10:12-13 “So now, ISRAEL, ALL that YHVH asks from you is to FEAR YHVH your God, follow ALL HIS WAYS, LOVE HIM and SERVE YHVH your God with ALL your HEART and ALL your BEING (your soul, including your mind and free will); to OBEY, for your own good, the mitzvoth (the COMMANDMENTS) and REGULATIONS (rules, guidelines, principles) of YHVH…” (Also read Deuteronomy chapters 5 and 6).
David said in Psalm 101:1 “I am singing of GRACE and JUSTICE; I am singing to You YHVH.” And we read in Proverbs 21:3 “To DO what is RIGHT and JUST (fair, impartial, unbiased) is more pleasing to YHVH than sacrifice.” And the prophets reiterated this like Micah saying in Micah 6:8, a quotation of Deuteronomy 10:12: “Human being, you have already been told what is GOOD, what YHVH demands of you – no more than to ACT JUSTLY, LOVE GRACE (the NIV says LOVE MERCY) and WALK in PURITY with your GOD.
And YHVH says through the prophet Zechariah in chapter 7:9-10 “In the past YHVH-Tzvaot (YHVH of Heavens Armies) said: ‘Administer TURE JUSTICE. Let EVERYONE SHOW MERCY and COMPASSION (kindness, consideration) to his brother. Don’t oppress (tyrannize, dominate, harass) widows, orphans, foreigners or poor people. Don’t plot evil against each other.” And Samuel said to king Saul (the first king of Israel) in 1st Samuel 15:22-23 when he was disobedient to the instructions of God: “Does YHVH take as much pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in OBEYING what YHVH says? SURELY OBEYING is better than sacrifice, and HEEDING (following) ORDERS (instructions, guidelines, commands) than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of sorcery (witchcraft), stubbornness like the crime of idolatry.”
And we find similar words as spoken by Samuel when God called His people to RETURN to Him in LOVING FAITHFULNESS saying in Hosea 6:6: “For what I desire is MERCY, not sacrifices, KNOWLEDGE of GOD more than burns offerings.” We also read in Hosea 12:6 “So you, RETURN to your God; HOLD FAST to GRACE and JUSTICE; and ALWAYS put your HOPE in your GOD.” And Yeshua our Messiah said to the Pharisees when they accused Him of eating with tax-collectors and sinners in Matthew 9:12-13, “The ones who needs a doctor aren’t the healthy but the sick. As for you, go and learn what this means: ‘I want compassion (kindness, consideration, care) rather than animal sacrifices…” And in Matthew chapter 12 when the Pharisees accused Yeshua’s disciples of picking heads of grain on the Sabbath and eating it and Yeshua answered them in Matthew 12:7-8 “If you knew what ‘I want compassion (kindness, consideration, care) rather than animal sacrifice’ meant, you would not condemn the innocent. For the Son of Man is (the) MASTER of Shabbat (the Sabbath)!”
MERCY is an UNDESERVED COSTLY GIFT, given by the one who has suffered wrong, to the one who has sinned against them. To GIVE MERCY (entailing undeserved kindness and compassion) is to GIVE GRACE (meaning, undeserved favor); therefore to GIVE UNDESERVED GOODNESS which is a GENEROUS and COSTLY GIFT. God promises to REWARD those who GIVES this COSTLY GIFT of MERCY to other people; therefore the MERCIFUL shall obtain HIS MERCY. All of us NEED this PRECIOUS GIFT from GOD.
THE PERFECT example of MERCY and JUDGEMENT is the THRONE of GOD, namely the ARK of the COVENENANT.
David says in Psalm 89:14 and 97:2, “RIGHTEOUSNESS and JUSTICE are the FOUNDATION of YOUR THORNE; GRACE and TRUTH attend (go before) You.”
We read for the first time of the ARK of the COVENANT in Exodus 25:10-22 after God told Moses in Exodus 25:9 “You are to make it according to everything I show you – the design of the TABERNACLE and the design of its FURNISHINGS. This is how you are to make it.” He then went on explaining the detail for making the ARK of the COVENANT in verses 10-20. The ARK itself had to be made of acacia wood three-and-three quarters feet long, two-and-a-quarter feet wide and two-and-a-quarter feet high. It had to be overlaid with pure gold both inside and outside and a molding of gold put around the top of it. Then they had to make a COVER (also called the MERCY SEAT) for the ARK out of PURE GOLD, with two cherubs of gold placed at the two ends of the cover with their wings spread out above so that their wings cover the ARK and their faces are toward each other and toward the ARK-COVER. And the ARK COVER is to be put on top of the ARK. And we read in verses 21-22: “Inside the ARK you will put THE TESTIMONY that I am about to give you. There I will MEET with you. I will SPEAK with you from above the ARK COVER (the MERCY SEAT), from between the two cherubs which are on the ARK for THE TESTIMONY, about ALL the ORDERS (COMMANDS) I am giving you for the people of ISRAEL.” And it is confirmed in Exodus 31:18 and Deuteronomy 9:10 that this is the TEN COMMANDMENTS written by the FINGER of GOD on TWO STONE TABLETS (an indication of God’s Holy Spirit as also indicated by Yeshua our Messiah in Luke 11:20).
We can therefore see from these detail instructions that the ARK of the COVENANT had to be compiled of TWO DISTINCT PIECES, namely:
1.The ARK
And inside the ARK THE TESTIMONY entailing the TWO STONE TABLETS with the TEN COMMANMENTS of LOVE for GOD above ALL ELSE and LOVE for other people as we LOVE ourselves, therefore GOD’s LAW of LOVE written on them (also read Hebrews 9:5). Therefore it indeed forms the RIGHTEOUS and JUST FOUNDATION of YHVH’s THORNE according to which HE REIGNS as David describes it in Psalm 89:14! We also read in Deuteronomy 31:24-26 “Moses kept writing the WORDS of this TORAH (Genesis to Deuteronomy) in a BOOK until he was done. When he had finished, Moses gave these orders to the Levites who carried the ARK of the COVENANT of YHVH: Take this Book of the TORAH and put it next to the ARK with the COVENANT (the TEN COMMANDMENTS) of YHVH your God, so that it can be there to WITNESS against you.” REMEMBER, Genesis to Deuteronomy gives us the detail on how to keep the TEN COMMANDMENTS. This is confirmed in the FIRST PART of John 1:17 saying: “For the TORAH (Genesis to Deuteronomy, Summed up in the Ten Commandments) were given through Moses…”
2.THE MERCY SEAT COVERING THE ARK
The second piece of the ARK of the COVENANT is the LID covering it, also called the MERCY SEAT that therefore COVERS the contents of THE ARK.
We can therefore say GOD’s JUST JUDGEMENT (HIS RULINGS SUMMERISED in HIS COVENANT as set out in HIS TEN COMMANDMENTS) is covered with HIS MERCY! But it goes much further than that. To PAY for contravening (breaking, disobeying) God’s LAW as contained in the ARK of the COVENANT, a GUILTLESS BLOOD OFFERING was needed, that no human being could bring since ALL of MANKIND transgressed God’s LAW of LOVE (Romans 3:23). God therefore allowed a guiltless blood sacrifice in the form of specific clean animals to be offered on the sinner’s behalf and this blood had to be sprinkled on the MERCY SEAT. He had to teach people this BEFORE He could come HIMSELF in the form of HIS SON, YESHUA the MESSIAH to bring this BLOOD OFFERING once and for all, covering HIS LAW that carried the DEAHT PENALTY for TRANSGRESSORS. Yeshua our Messiah paid this COSTLY PRICE of GOD’s MERCY once and for ALL for ALL HUMANKIND who are willing to accept this price for their sins on their behalf by FAITH (read Matthew 26:28, Ephesians 2:8-9, 1st Peter 3:11 and 1 John 2:1-2). And that is why it is confirmed in the second part of John 1:17 saying: “…GRACE and TRUTH came through came through Yeshua the Messiah.”
On earth when we accept this COSTLY SACRIFICE of YESHUA our MESSIAH, we can LIFE in PERFECT PEACE with YHVH our FATHER and be guided on daily repenting of our sins and turning away from it. Read 1 John 1:1-10 explaining it.
God our Father also PROVIDED us with SEVEN FEASTS, acting as a SEVEN STEP SALVATION and SANCTIFICATION PLAN, giving us CLEAR DIRECTION and teaching and helping us to WALK in OBEDIENCE in the FOOTSTEPS of YESHUA our MESSIAH in accordance to the WORD with the summary of the TORAH, the TEN COMMANMDENTS written on our HEARTS on the NARROW WAY with the guiding and support of the HOLY SPIRIT. We must understand that ALL of us will stand before GOD in the WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT, the LAST JUDGEMENT of ALL people who ever lived (represented by the 8th DAY of the Feast of Tabernacles), before ETERNITY will begin and we will be JUDGED in ACCORDANCE to what we have done while living on earth in our earthly bodies according to TWO ELEMENTS:
1). OBEDIENCE to the WORD of GOD.
Deuteronomy 31:26 tells us in this regard: “Take this Book of the TORAH (Genesis to Deuteronomy) and put it next to the ARK with the COVENANT (next to the Ark containing the two stone tablets with the TEN COMMANDMENTS written on it) of YHVH your God, so that it can be there to WITNESS against you.” Please let no man deceive you that this only applies to the Jews. Deuteronomy 31:26 was given to the people who were part of the Exodus out of Egypt, shortly before entering the promised land and it included the following people: The TWELVE TRIBES of ISRAEL, take note, today’s people called the JEWS represents only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin who formed the Southern Kingdom during the division of the TWELVE TRIBES of ISRAEL during the reign of Rehoboam, king Solomon’s son. The rest of the TEN TRIBES were united under Ephraim (called the Northern Kingdom) who were Joseph’s son accepted by Jacob his grandfather as part of the TWELVE TRIBES. Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh had an Egyptian mother. And then there was also a great multitude of mixed nations with them. And ALL of them accepting God’s LAWS and PRINCIPLES became PART of GOD’s ISRAEL, just as ALL people today who accepts Yeshua the Messiah as their Saviour and follow in obedience to God’s WORD, HIS LAW of LOVE, HIS COMMANDMENTS, are indeed part of GOD’s ISRAEL (Read Romans 11:11-17 and Galatians 6:14-16). And Yeshua our Messiah Himself confirmed this in John 12:47-48 saying: “If anyone hears what I am saying and does not OBSERVE it, I don’t JUDGE him; for I did not come (referring to His FIRST COMING) to JUDGE the world, but to SAVE the world. Those who reject Me and don’t accept what I say have a JUDGE – the WORD which I have spoken will JUDGE them on the LAST DAY (referring to the FINAL GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT as depicted in the 8th and therefore the LAST DAY of the Feast of Tabernacles, hereafter eternity will commence as we read in Revelation 20:11-15 to Revelation chapter 22)” REMEMBER, YESHUA is the BODY of GOD the FATHER (read John 14:9, Colossians 1:19, 2:9 and Hebrews 1:3) therefore THE TOTAL WORD from GENESIS to REVELATION ARE ALL HIS WORDS.
We know that there will be TWO JUDGEMENTS, the FIRST will be the JUDGEMENT SEAT of YESHUA the MESSIAH, where BELIEVERS in HIM who are part of the FIRST RESURECTION will be evaluated according to their FAITHFULNESS and WORK done for the KINGDOM with the GIFTS and CALLINGS they had and receive their REWARDS (read 2nd Corinthians 5:10 and Revelation chapter 2 to 3). Paul warned in Romans chapter 2 that evidence is gathered for both this evaluation as well as the GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT where ALL PEOPLE will be judged before the SECOND DEATH which is described as the LAKE of FIRE (generally known as HEL). Yeshua our Messiah often warned against this like in Matthew 5:17-48 where He clearly indicate that transgression of the TEN COMMANDMENDS could lead to eternity in the Lake of Fire, which is the SECOND DEATH as we also read in Revelation 20:11-15.
And during these JUDGEMENTS Yeshua our Messiah told us in Matthew 7:1-2 “…For the way you JUDGE others is how you will be JUDGED – the measure with which you measure out will be used to measure you.” Also read Lukas 6:31-38. Therefore WE HAVE TO JUDGE WITH MERCY if we WANT TO BE JUDGED by GOD with MERCY in both the JUDGEMENT SEAT of YESHUA our MESSIAH during the FIRST RESURECTION before the THOUSAND YEAR REIGN of PEACE of YESHUA the MESSIAH as well as the FINAL GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT after the THOUSAND YEAR KINGDOM. James also says in James 2:13 “For JUDGEMENT will be without MERCY toward one who doesn’t show MERCY; but MERCY wins over JUDGEMENT.” And this is indeed TURE and brings us to:
2). ACCEPTING YESHUA THE MESSIAH AS SAVIOR
THE SECOND IMPORTANT ELEMENT of accepting YESHUA the MESSIAH’s PRECIOUS BLOOD on the MERCY SEAT, covering the LAW in terms of its POWER to CONDEMN us to ETERNAL DEATH (meaning the SECOND DEATH in the LAKE of FIRE) for our sins. Read John 3:18 and Romans 5:6-10. Yeshua the Messiah will therefore at the GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT be the ADVOCATE of ALL BELIEVERS in HIM accepting HIM as their SAVIOR. It is indicated in Revelation 20:12 and 21:27 as those whose NAMES are WRITTEN in the LAMBS BOOK of LIFE.
The description of the NEW COVENANT in Jeremiah 31:31-34 describes both these elements as we read: “The DAYS are coming says YHVH, when I will make a NEW COVENANT with the HOUSE of ISRAEL (that is the Northern Kingdom, the Ten tribes under Ephraim and all believers grafting into ISRAEL through the acceptance of Yeshua the Messiah and following Him in obedience to the Father) and with the HOUSE of JUDAH (that is the Southern kingdom of Judah and Benjamin, known as the Jews). It will not be like the COVENANT I made with their fathers on the day I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt; because they for their part, violated MY COVENANT, even though I, for MY PART, was a HUSBAND to them, says YHVH.
For this COVENANT I will make with the HOUSE OF ISRAEL after those days (now only referring to the Northern Kingdom, the Ten tribes under Ephraim and all believers grafting into ISRAEL through the acceptance of Yeshua the Messiah and following Him in obedience to the Father) says YHVH: I will put MY TORAH (Genesis to Deuteronomy, summed up in the TEN COMMANDMENTS) within them and write it on their hearts; I will be their GOD, and they will be MY PEOPLE. No longer will any of them teach his fellow community member or his brother, ‘Know YHVH’; for they will ALL know Me, from the least of them to the greatest; because I will FORGIVE their wickedness and remember their sins no more.” These words are quoted and confirmed in the New Testament in Hebrews 8:8-12 and 10:16-17.
So what CHANGED between the OLD and NEW COVENANT?
- The BLOOD of the LAMB of God paid the FULL PRICE for our sin once and for all; and
- The LAW of GOD the FATHER (Genesis to Deuteronomy as SUMMED UP in the TEN COMMANDMENTS) is now WRITTEN on BELIEVER’s HEARTS and the HOLY SPIRIT guides us to WALK according to it and immediately REPENT when we commit accidental sins and TURN AWAY from it.
We see a prophecy about Yeshua’s THRONE described in HIS THOUSAND YEAR REIGN of PEACE after the destruction of His enemies in the war of Armageddon as we read in Revelation chapters 16:15-16, 17:13-14 and 19:11-21, in Isaiah 16:5 “For when the extorting ends, the spoiling ceases, and those trampling on the land are DESTROYED, a THRONE will be set up by GRACE, and on it, in the tent (the TABERNACLE/ the TEMPLE) of David, will sit an HONEST JUDGE, SEEKING JUSTICE and PURSUING RGHTEOUSNESS. We also read in Proverbs 20:28 “GRACE and TRUTH preserve a king; with GRACE he upholds his throne.
We read in Psalm 119:1-176 Blessed are those who WALK in the TORAH (we can say the LAW of LOVE of YHVH). Blessed are those who KEEP HIS TESTIMONIES. And it is confirmed in Revelation 1:1-3 “This is the REVELATION which God (the Father) gave to Yeshua the Messiah, so that He could show His servants what must happen very soon. He communicated it by sending His angel to His servant John, who bore WITNESS to the WORD of GOD (the Father) and to the TESTIMONY of YESHUA the MESSIAH, as much as he saw. Blessed are the readers and hearers of the WORDS of this prophecy, provided they OBEY the things written in it! For the time is near!
And we read confirmation of these elements as being part of true believers in Revelation 12:11 “They defeat the Accuser (also known as the great dragon, the ancient serpent of the Garden of Eden, the devil and Satan) because of the BLOOD of the LAMB (Yeshua our Messiah) and because of the MESSAGE of their WITNESS (the GOOD NEWS of SALVATION). And even when facing death they did not cling to live (because remember the Word tells us believers upon their first death go to Paradise, then upon the Second Coming of Yeshua our Messiah, they come with Him to receive their resurrected bodies and they enter the Thousand Year Kingdom of Peace to reign with Him and at the end of that period they enter ETERNITY with God the Father and the Lamb). And Revelation 12:17 again confirms the TWO important elements of TRUE BELIEVERS namely: OBEYING the COMMANMDENTS of GOD the FATHER, and BEARING WITNESS to YESHUA our MESSIAH as our REDEEMER by HIS precious BLOOD.
