THE GOSPELS: The Ministry of Yeshua in Galilee, HEALING those held in the power of demons

We are studying the MINISTRY of YESHUA in GALILEE.

We are mainly reading from the Complete Jewish Study Bible – insight for Jews and Christians. And use the Hebrew letters for the name of God, YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh) where the word LORD in English is indicated in capital letters in the Scriptures. The reason being that the Jewish writers removed the vowels in God’s name out of fear of transgressing the third Commandment of taking His Name in vain. And today there is a lot of controversy about the pronunciation of His Name.  We also refer to Him as Abba Father and use the Hebrew Name Yeshua the Messiah instead of the English Name Jesus Christ translated from the Greek.

We read in Matthew 4:23-25 “Yeshua went all over Galilee TEACHING in their synagogues, PROCLAIMING the GOOD NEWS of the KINGDOM, and HEALING people from EVERY KIND of DISEASE and SICKNESS. Word about Him spread throughout ALL Syria (a somewhat indefinite region bounded in general by the Taurus Mountains, the Euphrates River, the Syrian and Arabian deserts, northern Palestine, and the Mediterranean), and people brought to Him ALL who were ILL, SUFFERING from various DISEASE and PAINS, and those HELD in the power of demons, and epileptics and paralytics; and HE HEALED them. Huge crowds followed Him from Galilee, the Ten Towns (the Decapolis – consisting of Ten Cities that were built by the followers of Alexander the great, located south east of Galilee), Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan.”

Today we are going to focus on how YESHUA our MESSIAH HEALS PEOPLE that are HELD in the power of demons.

But FIRST we have to understand how demons gain power over people.

The Word of God defines people as being:

• Vessels.
• Instruments and
• Temples.

And this gives us insight in how demons can gain power over people, even those who are confessing believers in and followers of Yeshua the Messiah, generally known as Christians.

So, we are going to explore what the WORD teaches us about it.

First, we are going to talk about people being regarded as:

1. VESSELS

The Nelson’s Foundational Bible Dictionary describes a VESSEL as: Any kind of CONTAINER from a JAR or POT to a SHIP. Christians are described as “earthen (clay, stone, mud, sand) vessels,” a metaphoric way of speaking of the mortality and frailty of humans, who nevertheless have the treasure of the knowledge of God hidden inside them.

We read in Isaiah 64:8: “…YHVH, You are our FATHER; we are the CLAY, You are the POTTER; and we are ALL the WORK of YOUR HANDS.” Also read Jeremiah chapter 18 and Romans 9:21-23 explaining to us that God is like a potter forming the clay into a vessel of His choice and for His purpose.

There are many types and shadows in the Old Testament of VESSELS made for the TABERNACLE and later the TEMPLE for the purpose of God the Father.

We see in the OLD TESTAMENT that when the people of GOD were captured by their enemies, they usually DESTORYED the TEMPLE of GOD and took the VESSELS used for God’s purposes and put it to use in the temples of their small letter gods. Read for example Ezra 1:7-11 and Daniel 1:2 and 5:2-3.

And we see the same being done in terms of PEOPLE who are the VESSELS made by YHVH our GOD to serve HIM. When the evil enemy captures people, they are used as VESSELS to serve the evil purposes of him and his evil forces.

In Jeremiah 51:34 NIV we read a description of being EMPTIED like a JAR by the enemy. We read here: “Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured us, he has thrown us into confusion, he has made us an EMPTY JAR. Like a serpent he has swallowed us and filled his stomach with our delicacies, and then spewed us out.”

Paul explains it as follows in Ephesians 2:1-3 “You used to be DEAD because of your SINS and ACTS of DISOBEDIENCE. You WALKED in the WAYS of the olam hazeh (this world) and OBEYED the ruler of the powers of the air, who is still at work among the DISOBEDIENT. Indeed, we ALL once lived that way – we followed the passions of our OLD NATURE and OBEYED the WISHES of our OLD NATURE and our OWN THROUGHTS. In our natural condition we were headed for God’s wrath, just like everyone else.”

In Psalm 31 David also uses the clay vessel imagery when he says in verse 12 “Like a dead man, I have passed from their minds; I have become like a BROKEN POT (a broken vessel).”   And in Ecclesiastes 12:5c-7 death is described as follows: “…the person is headed for his ETERNAL HOME, and the mourners are already gathering in the marketplace – before the silver cord is snapped the bowl (the vessel) of gold is cracked (broken), the pitcher is shattered at the spring, the pulley is broken at the cistern, the DUST RETURNS to earth as it was, and the spirit RETURNS to GOD, who gave it!”

And also in Revelation 2:26-27 we see the clay vessel imagery when we read about Yeshua the Messiah’s message to the congregation of Thyatira pointing to the THHOUSAND YEAR REIGN of the MESSIAH and FAITHFUL BELIEVERS who will be part of the FIRST RESURECTION:  “To him who wins the VICTORY and DOES what I WANT until the GOAL is REACHED (the NIV says: to the one who is victorious and DOES MY WILL TO THE END), I WILL GIVE him authority over the nations; he will rule them with a STAFF of IRON and DAHS them to pieces like POTTERY, just as I have received authority from My Father (read Psalm 2:8-9 and Revelation 20:4-6)

The WORD also describes people as:

2. INSTRUMENTS

Master Yeshua told Ananias to go to Saul after he met with Yeshua on his journey to Damascus and was blinded. Ananias had to place his hands on Saul to restore his sight but Ananias was hesitant because of the reports of the harm Saul had done to the believers in Jerusalem. And then we read in in Acts 9:15: But Master (Yeshua) said to Ananias, ‘Go! This man is MY CHOSEN INSTRUMENT to CARRY MY NAME to the NATIONS, even to KINGS, and to the SONS of ISRAEL as well (that is the Northern Kingdom, the Ten lost Tribes under Ephraim).”

Paul explains in Romans 6:8-13 “Now since we died with the Messiah (alluding to the old nature), we TRUST (believe, have faith) that we will also LIVE with Him. We know that the Messiah has been RAISED from the dead, NEVER to die again; death has NO authority over Him. For His death was a unique event that need not be repeated; but His life, He keeps on LIVING FOR GOD (the Father). In the same way, consider yourselves to be DEAD TO SIN but ALIVE FOR GOD (the Father), by your UNION with the MESSIAH YESHUA. Therefore, do NOT let sin rule in your mortal bodies, so that it MAKES you OBEY ITS DESIRES; and do NOT offer any part of yourselves to sin as an instrument for wickedness. On the contrary, OFFER YOURSELVES TO GOD AS PEOPLE ALIVE FROM THE DEAD, and your various parts TO GOD AS INSTRUMENTS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (with other words to DO HIS WILL). These words of Paul are very similar to what God told Cain in Genesis 4:6-7.

Paul also says in Ephesians 2:10 :For we are God’s MAKING, CREATED in UNION with the MESSIAH YESHUA for a LIFE of GOOD ACTIONS ALREADY PREPARED by GOD (the Father) for us to DO.”

We also know very well that the WORD calls BELIEVERS in YEHSUA the MESSIAH, GOD’s:

3. TEMPLES

Paul tells us in 1^st Corinthians 6:19-20 “…don’t you know that your BODY is a TEMPLE for the Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) who LIVES INSIDE you, whom you RECEIVED from GOD (the Father)? The fact is, you don’t belong to yourselves; for you were bought at a price (the precious blood of Yeshua the Messiah as a Lamb without blemish or defect). So use your BODIES TO GLORIFY GOD (the Father).“ Also read 1^st Peter 1:18.

Paul encourages believers in Romans 12:1-2: “…in view of God (the Father’s) mercies, to offer yourselves as a sacrifice, LIVING and SET APART FOR GOD. This will please Him; it is the logical ‘TEMPLE WORSHIP’ for you. In other words, DO NOT let yourselves be conformed to the standards of the olam hazeh (this world). Instead, keep letting yourselves be TRANSFORMED by the RENEWING of your MINDS (the way you think, your thoughts); so that you will KNOW what GOD (the Father) wants and WILL AGREE that what HE WANTS is GOOD, SATISFYING and ABLE TO SUCCEED.”

This means that when we STUDY GOD’s WORD every day TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HIS WILL IS FOR OUR LIVES and we come to AGREE that HIS WILL IS WHAT IS BEST FOR US and OUR FAMILIES, we WILL ALLOW IT TO BECOME PART of HOW WE THINK, AND HOW WE FEEL and WE SUBSEQUENTLY WILL ACT ACCORDING TO IT resulting in a GOOD, SATISFYING and BLESSED LIVE.

WHEN WE conform our MINDS to the WAYS of the WORLD, gratifying the desires of the flesh, demons will be able to get a hold of us and our VESSELS will be filled with evil and we will be used as their TEMPLES and as INSTRUMENTS to do their WORK, the WORKS of THE FLESH resulting in the FRUITS of the FLESH; the things we read about in Galatians 5:19-21 like sexual immorality, impurity, indecency, involvement in the occult and with drugs, fighting, arguing, disagreeing, jealousy, getting angry, drunkenness and the like.

We read about such a VESSEL in Luke 4:31-37

“He (Yeshua) went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and made a practice of teaching them on the Shabbat (the Sabbath). They were amazed at the way He taught, because His word carried authority. In the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean demonic spirit, who shouted in a loud voice, Go away! What do You want with us, Yeshua from Nazareth: Have You come to DESTROY us? I know who You are – the Holy One of God (the Father)! But Yeshua rebuked it (the demon): ‘Be quiet, and come out of him!’ The demonic spirit threw the man down in the middle of the crowd and came out of him, having done him no harm. They were all astounded and said to one another, ‘What kind of teaching is this? Why, He gives orders with POWER and AUTHORITY to unclean spirits and they come out! And reports about Him went out through the whole surrounding district.” (Also read Mark 1:21-28).

The Nelson’s Foundational Bible Dictionary explains: demons are one of the lower order of spiritual beings. Satan is the prince of demons (read Matthew 9:34 and Luke 11:15) There are many demons. Persons possessed by demons suffer from diseases and torture. They can speak and are distinct from those whom they poses and they exhibit unusual knowledge.

We see that the man who had the demonic spirit attended the synagogue service, therefore we can assume that he was religious.

We know that BELIEVERS can be entered by demons, since Judas Iscariot was a disciple and therefore a follower of Yeshua the Messiah and still we read in Luke 22:3 Satan ENTERED JUDAS and therefore he was able to betray Yeshua and turn Him over to the chief priests and the Temple guards.

Paul warns in 2^nd Corinthians 4:4 that the GOOD NEWS of the GOSPEL can become veiled to people whose MINDS had been BLINDED by the (small letter) god of the olam hazeh (this world) with the intention to PREVENT them from seeing the LIGHT shining from the GOOD NEWS about the GLROY of the MESSIAH, who is the IMAGE of GOD (the Father).

This is scary! It means that if our MINDS (our way of thinking, our thoughts) are daily MOSTLY influenced by the WORLD through the things we watch, listen to, eat, drink and smoke, we will become BLIND to (unable to SEE or understand) the GOOD NEWS of the WORD of GOD! And when this happens we are in the process of being LOST! (Read verse 3). Being lost means when such a person dies the FIRST DEATH (which all people will), their bodies will remain in the ground (in the dust of the earth as Ecclesiastes 12:7 puts it) and their soul and spirit will go to the underworld, not to Paradise and they will not be part of the FIRST RESURECTION at the SECOND COMING of YESHUA the MESSIAH and HIS THOUSAND YEAR REIGN OF PEACE. Their BODIES will remain DEAD and their SOULS and SPIRITS will remain in the UNDERWORLD until the FINAL GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT when they too will be RESURECTED for the FINAL JUDGEMENT and will then join SATAN and his evil forces in the LAKE of FIRE (read Revelation chapters 19-20).

Please note, it does not have to be that way! We read in 2^nd Peter 3:9 “God is not slow in keeping His promise, as some people think of slowness; on the contrary, He is PATIENT with you; for it is not His purpose that anyone be destroyed, but that EVERYONE SHOULD TURN FROM his sins.”

And therefore the GOOD NEWS is that we, as VESSELS made by God for His purposes, can be CLEANSED.

We read in Proverbs 25:4 “Remove the impurities (the filth) from the silver, and the (silver) smith has material to make a vessel.”

And Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:19-25 “…God’s FIRM FOUNDATION stands, stamped with these words: ‘YHVH knows His own (referring to Numbers 16:5) and, ‘Let everyone who claims he belongs to YHVH stand apart from wrongdoing (referring to Numbers 16:26).  In a large house there are dishes and POTS not only of GOLD and SILVER, but also of WOOD and CLAY. That is, some are meant for honourable use and some for dishonourable. If a person KEEPS HIMSELF FREE of DEFILEMENT by the latter (keeps himself from wrongdoing), he WILL BE A VESSEL SET ASIDE FOR HONORABLE USE BY THE MASTER OF THE HOUSE and READY FOR EVERY KIND OF GOOD WORK. So, FLEE the passions of youth; and, along with those who call on the MASTER (YESHUA) from a PURE HEART, PURSUE RIGHTEOUSNESS, FAITHFULNESS, LOVE and PEACE. But stay away from stupid (unwise, senseless) controversies (disagreements, arguments, debates) – you know that they lead to fights, and a slave (or servant) of the Master (Yeshua) shouldn’t fight. On the contrary, he should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and not resentful when mistreated. Also he should be gentle as he corrects his opponents. For God (the Father) may perhaps grant them the opportunity to TURN from their sins, acquire full knowledge of the TRUTH, come to their senses and escape the TRAP of the Adversary (Satan), after having been CAPTURED ALIVE by him to do his will.”

We read in Hebrews 9:21-24  again a shadows and types of the OLD TESTAMENT as explanation for what was revealed in the NEW TESTAMENT, saying: “…according to the Torah (Genesis to Deuteronomy) almost EVERYTHING is PURIFIED with BLOOD, indeed, without the shedding of blood there is NO FORGIVENESS of sins. Now this is how the copies of the heavenly things had to be purified, but the heavenly things themselves require better sacrifices than these (meaning better sacrifices than the blood of animals). For the Messiah has entered a Holiest Place which is not man-made and merely a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, in order to appear now on our behalf in the very presence of God (the Father).” And in verses 25-28 we read He appeared with His OWN BLOOD and it was a SACRIFICE once and for ALL to bear the sins of many (also read Isaiah 53:12). And He will appear a SECOND time, not to deal with sin, but to DELIVER those who are eagerly waiting for Him.

Paul explains in 2^nd Corinthians 4:6-7 “For it is the God who once said, ‘Let LIGHT shine out of the darkness (referring to Genesis 1:3), who has made HIS LIGHT SHINE in our HEARTS, the LIGHT of the KNOWLEDGE of GOD (the Father’s) GLORY SHINING in the FACE of the MESSIAH YESHUA. But we have this TREASURE in CLAY JARS, so that it will be evident that such overwhelming POWER comes from GOD (the Father) and not from us. We have all kinds of trouble, but we are not crushed; we are perplexed (puzzled), yet not in despair; persecuted, yet not abandoned; knocked down, yet not destroyed.”

To get HEALED the VESSEL needs to be CLEANSED and USED FOR THE GODLY PURPOSE IT WAS MADE FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Paul tells us in 2^nd Corinthians 6:14-18 we have to get rid of our fellowship with lawlessness and darkness and the agreement with Belial (a term used for Satan, wickedness and ungodliness) as well as agreement with UNBELIEVERS viewed as a TEMPLE of idols and BELIEVERS who are TEMPELS of GOD the Father. Therefore BELIEVERS have to SEPARATE themselves and not even touch what is unclean, then YHVH will be our Father and we will be His sons and daughters. Also read Jeremiah 31:32-33, Isaiah 52:11, Ezekiel 20:34, 41 & 37:27.

John tells us how this CLEANSING process works in 1 John 1:7-8 saying: “If we are WALKING in the LIGHT (living in OBEDIENCE to the WORD), as HE (Yeshua the Messiah) is in THE LIGHT, then we have fellowship (communion/ a close relationship) with each other, and the BLOOD of His Son Yeshua purifies us from ALL sin. If we claim we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the TRUTH is not in us. If we acknowledge (admit and confess) our sins, then since He is TRUSTWORTHY and JUST, He will FORGIVE them and PURIFY us from ALL WRONGDOING.”

The Complete Jewish Study Bible explains: acknowledging sin is not merely a verbal transaction but also teshuvah (REPENTANCE with a remorseful/ regretful heart), as a person FULLY TURNS (AWAY) from his iniquity. Authentic (genuine) repentance is essential for TRUE FORGIVENESS.

We read in Proverbs 28:13 “He who CONCEALS (hides) his sins will not succeed; he who confesses and abandons them will GAIN MERCY.”

And Peter confirms the REASON for and IMPORTANCE of repentance saying in Acts 2:38 “TURN from sins, RETURN to GOD (the Father, meaning DO HIS WILL according to HIS WORD), and each of you be IMMERSED on the AUTHORITY of YESHUA the MESSIAH INTO FORGIVENESS of your sins, and you WILL RECEIVE THE GIFT of the Ruach Ha Kodesh (the HOLY SPIRIT).

CONTROL your BODY BY DECIDNG WHAT YOU ALLOW TO ENTER YOUR MIND through any type of MEDIA, be it TV, MOVIES, GAMES, MAGAZINES, BOOKS, the INTERNET, SOCIAL MEDIA, FRIENDS, FAMILY, COLEEAGUES  etc. (therefore be careful with anything able to affect your THOUGHTS, leading to emotions and decisions) especially THROUGH YOUR EYES and EARS but also through your mouth, like drugs or alcohol, altering your mind and therefore impacting your ability to control yourself and other harmful new age practices opening your mind to demonic spirits.

REMEMBER what you ALLOW to TEACH you will FORM your MINDSET and CONTROL your VIEWS, OPINIONS and DECISIONS and therefore your life. We need to take heed of the WARNINGS from the history of God’s people in the Old Testament, as Paul tells us in 1^st Corinthians 10:11. And we need to especially take note of the WORDS of YESHUA our MESSIAH WARNING us in John 8:44 and John 10:10a, telling us that Satan is a murderer of human beings from the beginning and there is NO TRUTH in him and therefore lying is part of his character and he is in fact the inventor of the lie. He also is a thief who ONLY STEAL, KILL and DESTROY. And be very careful because he is a master in deception and will make you believe he is an angel of light to catch you ALIVE in his traps and get you into his power (read 2^nd Corinthians 11:14 and 2 Timothy 2:19-25). We also read in 1^st John 3:7-8 “…don’t let anyone deceive you – it is the person that keeps on DOING WHAT IS RIGHT who is righteous, just as God is righteous. The person who keeps on sinning is from the Adversary (Satan), because from the very beginning the Adversary (Satan) has kept on sinning. It was for this very reason that the Son of God appeared, to DESTROY these doings of the Adversary (Satan).”

Our MINDS are like a COMPUTER – WHAT OUR MINDS ARE TAUGHT will shape our BELIEFS, our BELIEFS will influence (trigger) our EMOTIONS, and we ALWAYS REACT/ BEHAVE in line with our emotions. That is why the WORD of GOD tells us to TRAIN UP A CHILD in GOD’s WAYS and even when old, he will not swerve from it. Read Deuteronomy 6:4-7 and Proverbs 22:6.

But don’t despair – we also know from Ephesians 2 and Isaiah 53:6 ALL of US WENT ASTRAY, each one to his own ways BUT it is POSSIBLE to RETURN and BE HEALED by YESHUA THE MESSIAH, THE LIVING WORD OF GOD. If we READ and MEDITATE on HIS WORD EVERY DAY, AND FOLLOW THE GUIDANCE OF HIS HOLY SPIRIT ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF HIS WORD, OUR THOUGHTS WILL CHANGE, THIS WILL LEAD TO A CHANGE IN OUR EMOTIONS and RESULT in CHANGES in OUR BEHAVIOUR because we WILL DEVELOP THE MIND of YESHUA the MESSIAH and THEREFORE WILL BECOME LIKE HIM MORE and MORE EACH DAY and EXPERIENCE HIS SHALOM (peace) that surpasses all understanding and it will keep our HEARTS and MINDS SAFE in UNION with MESSIAH YESHUA. (Read Philippians 4:6-7).

It will therefore require from us to DAILY SURRENDER our WILL to HIS WILL which we FIND by READING and HEARING HIS WORD and it will strengthen us to FLEE from TEMPTATIONS to all the things of the flesh as we read in Galatians 5:19-21. James 4:7 also encouraged us: “Therefore, SUBMIT to GOD. Moreover take a stand against the Adversary (Satan), and he will flee from you.” And although we are called to stay sober and alert because Satan is stalking about like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour as Peter warns in 1^st Peter 5:8, Paul assures us that we are able to RESIST and ENDURE TEMPTATION because God will provide a WAY out (read 1^st Corinthians 10:13).

But we will not be successful only using will power or avoiding situations or people, although that will be helpful, but we have to UNDERSTAND we are in a serious spiritual WAR against the spiritual forces of darkness and not against ourselves or other people and therefore what is necessary, if we really want to have VICTORY over sin, is to DAILY put on THE  ARMOUR OF GOD and to USE the WEAPONS of WARFARE that HE teaches us in HIS WORD, like in 2^nd Corinthians 10:3-5 and Ephesians 6:10-18. We also need to ACTIVELY GUARD EVERY THOUGHT WE THINK, and to be successful in monitoring our thoughts, we need to GUARD ALL GATES (eyes, ears, mouth, smell and touch) leading to our THOUGHTS and EMOTIONS. And we need to ACTIVELY steer our THROUGHTS in LINE with THE WORD of GOD, by DECIDING like Paul in 1^st Corinthians 6:12, I am not going to allow anything evil to gain control over me, and to decide in line with what God instructed Joshua, to be STRONG and VERY BOLD in taking care to follow God’s WORD and not to turn from it either to the right or the left because then we WILL succeed wherever we go. Also read Philippians 4:8 and Proverbs 4:20-23).

Paul tells us in Colossians 3:14-16 “Above all…, clothe yourselves with LOVE (1 Corinthians 13 type of LOVE), which binds everything together perfectly, and let the SHALOM (the peace) which comes from the MESSIAH be your HEART’s DECISION- MAKER, for this is why you were CALLED to be part of a single BODY (the Body of the MESSIAH, His CONGREGATION). And be thankful – let the WORD of the MESSIAH, in ALL its RICHNESS, LIVE IN YOU, as you TEACH and COUNCIL each other in all WISDOM, and as you SING PSALMS and HYMNS and SPIRITUAL SONGS with GRATITUTE to GOD (the Father) in your HEARTS.

Psalm 107:19-20 confirms: “In their trouble they cried to YHVH, and HE RESCUED them from their distress; HE SENT HIS WORD and HEALED them, HE DELIVERED them from destruction.

Yeshua the MESSIAH therefore STILL HEALS PEOPLE TODAY by SETTING us FREE from the power of evil but we have to FOLLOW HIS INSTRUCTIONS IN HIS WORD, BECAUSE THAT IS HOW HE ENTERS INTO US, HIS WORD BECOMES PART OF HOW WE THINK, FEEL AND ACT and THEN WE CAN BE VICTORIOUS OVER THE DARKNESS AND WE WILL BE HEALED, BECAUSE HIS LIGHT WILL ENTER US and SHINE THROUGH US!

PLEASE NOTE, IF WE KEEP ON INGESTING DARKNESS and EVIL through our EYES and EARS it is IMPSOSSIBLE to BECOME HEALED. WE HAVE TO CHOOSE LIFE (HIS WORD TAKEN IN DAILY) or DEATH (THE WORLD’s ways taken in daily). We have to CHOOSE like Abba Father calls each one of us to do in Deuteronomy 30:19-20 ”I call heaven and earth to  witness against you today  that I have presented you with LIFE and DEATH, the BLESSING and the CURSE. Therefore, CHOOSE LIFE, SO THAT YOU WILL LIVE, YOU and YOUR DESENDANTS, LOVING YHVH YOUR GOD, PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT HE SAYS and CLINGING TO HIM – for that IS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR LIFE! On this depends the length of time you will LIVE in the LAND YHVH swore He would give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. ”
